OH CB/ATH Kyle McCarthy (Notre Dame signee)

BN $

Kyle will visit ND this weekend, with an official offer in hand, after first stopping by Northwestern on thursday for a midweek visit. McCarthy received the ND off via phonecall from Irish HC Charlie Weis. He still has Ohio State as his leader but feels he needs to visit a few more campuses to make the right decision, "I’ll commit to wherever I fit best. Maybe it’s going to be Ohio State, maybe not, but right now they’re my leader.”

Per this mornings Cbus Dispatch Kyle says: "Going into this weekend I'd have to say Ohio State is probably my leader. It's funny, all the people around town here and at my scheool keep saying I'm going to Notre Dame. But I really enjoyed my visit to Ohio State two weeks ago. Coach Tressel and everybody down there are all great people."

Not a resounding endorsement, but certainly different than "I am just waiting for the ND offer."

That sounds encouraging. Like with Wilson, Polian is the one ND coach who scares me a little bit in this situation. He is supposedly an excellent recruiter and has done a decent job with this patchwork class of ND's. This class at ND, despite the coaching change, should be much better than last year's class.

Just thought I'd post the whole thing for everyone...

Dispatch Article

Kyle McCarthy was home from school on a snow day yesterday in Youngstown, watching a report about the New England Patriots on television when his telephone rang.

Patriots offensive coordinator Charlie Weis was the caller.

"That was pretty cool," McCarthy said.

It also was indicative of just how high his stock has risen in less than a month in the majorcollege recruiting market. The multipurpose back from Youngstown Mooney received a scholarship offer from Ohio State on Jan. 2, and since then Northwestern, Navy and Notre Dame have followed suit.

That explained why Weis called. As soon as he and the defending Super Bowl champion Patriots are done in the NFL playoffs, he will become coach at Notre Dame.

In the meantime, his staff is trying to round up prospects while he zips in occasionally by electronic means. Weis had a willing listener in McCarthy, who has made no secret of the fact he grew up as a fan of Notre Dame.

"But I will tell you this, that is going to have no impact on where I choose to play football next year," said McCarthy, who will make his official visit there this weekend.

"I’ll go there and see how I fit in with the people, the university, the coaches. Then I’ll come home and take a couple of days to think things through with my family and decide where I think I might fit in the best for the next four or five years."

He’s one of only five or six prospects still being chased by Ohio State, which has commitments from 15 players toward a class that likely won’t number more than 20 on signing day Feb. 2. "Going into this weekend I’d have to say Ohio State is probably my leader," McCarthy said. "It’s funny, all the people around town here and at my school keep saying I’m going to Notre Dame. But I really enjoyed my visit to Ohio State two weeks ago. Coach (Jim) Tressel and everybody down there are all great people."

The original poster is a frequent poster on that site and this would certainly be no surprise.

It is also interesting that they have posted a link to an OSU site for more info on McCarthy. Guess which site they are using? BuckeyePlanet!!

Kudos to our very own recruiting team.

Maybe someday the mighty ND Nation can catch up and use one of their own sites for recruiting information on their own players.

Per NDnation.com, are saying Kyle has commited to the Irish. Can anyone confirm or deny this? Just wondering what the info guru's can muster on this.

So far, that is the only site reporting the commitment. It would not be a huge surprise but I will wait for Scout or Rivals to report it before claiming it as official.

EDIT: Gary has posted that he called KM's father to find out the truth but his father would not answer if he committed. He only said he will have Kyle call GH later today. Draw your own conclusions from that one.

Their main page doesn't even list "McCarthy's commitment" under their "Latest Footbal News". You would think it would be if it were true.

(edit) Just saw grad's edit above, and I don't like the way that sounds.

This is one kid who I very sincerely wish nothing but the best for, wherever he ends up. He's a great young man, has a nice Irish name, and has loved ND his whole life.

Go where your heart leads you, Kyle. Any program that gets you will be better off for it.

Question...Is it typical that a recruit (ie. Kyle) would...MORE

NOT comment that he has commited to a school until he has had the opportunity to call the other schools recruiting/offering him to say...."Thanks but no thanks"???

Yes, there are lots of kids who wish to inform the staffs first before making their
final decision public. IMHO, its the responsible thing to do.

Deja vu, strohs: Exactly. I have the feeling that the kid is calling the coaches of the other schools out of courtesy to inform them he's going to ND. If that is indeed the case, that's classy and I hope the best for him at ND.
