I don't buy it.

I have played around with numerous methods of ranking conferences by adding layers of abstraction to my analysis. I don't usually post the results here for two reasons:
  1. The results (this year and last) suggest that the SEC is the best conference, though by a much smaller margin than the media seem to believe. Based on the rep that I get for stats, this board likes to see stats that make the Buckeyes and the Big 10 look good; to hell with how it was calculated.
  2. The calculations are so complex that to explain what the numbers actually mean would put most people to sleep.
At any rate, my analyses show that the ACC is far and away the worst conference. The Big East and the Big 12 have good teams at the top; but they are otherwise bloody awful. The Pac 10 is over-rated. The Big 10 is a close second to the SEC.

Not accounting for match-up issues; I stand-by the fact that OSU and LSU are very closely matched and are a notch above the rest of the country.

But if USC ends up in the Rose Bowl, and is healthy; we may see a better match-up in the 'Grand-Daddy' than in the NC game.

The fact that SF is right up there with the rest of the East despite not being able to compete in the conference tends to support your argument.

OSU is 12th in 3rd down efficiency (offense), and is ranked considerably lower than 12th in missed 3rd down conversions. It is the defense that is special this year.

I would expect that Tressel teams are rarely nation leaders in this stat. Other coaches might "run a draw and punt" when faced with a 3rd and long; but Tressel will run, run, run, punt just to milk the clock when he has a great defense and the lead. It doesn't do much for the offensive 3rd down stats; but it wins championships.

  • I would call the gap between #1 and #2 in DSD ridiculous, but "ridiculous" doesn't begin to describe the superiority of the OSU defense over anyone and everyone else.

Notes:
  • How bad did Minnesota suck on defense? There is no doubt in my mind that they played their best game against the Buckeyes, and that the Buckeye offense was flat as a pancake that day.
  • Who even knew that Arkansas' defense was that bad (#59)? How scary would they be with a good defense?
  • It would be nice if Pittsburgh had an offense to go with that #11 defense.
  • It is a truly unique event in CFB history for a team to be this far above everyone else, defensively; and to be so universally perceived as a fraud. These numbers can't be faked. You don't lead by this much in DIFFERENTIAL defense without a legitimately dominant defense.
  • Check out Mizzou and Oklahoma: #53 vs. #17 in total defense, but #29 vs. #6 in Differential Total Defense. The Tigers are better than people think, but the Sooners are still MUCH better. As Mizzou is better on offense, albeit by a smaller margin, it should be a decent game.

There is a great deal of data in the two tables above, so it's easy to miss the most interesting fact contained between the two. Ohio State is clearly the best Rush Defense AND clearly the best Pass Defense and its not even close. The balance of this defense is what is phenomenal.

Ohio State is #1 in all but one of the Differential Defensive Statistics (DPE) and they are #2 in that one.
  • Differential Scoring: #1
  • Differential Total: #1
  • Differential Rushing: #1
  • Differential Passing: #1
  • Differential Passing Efficiency: #2

But USC (west) is the only other team in the nation that is even in the Top 10 in all Differential Defensive Statistics.

Seriously: There is only one other team that is in the top 10 in every Differential Defensive Stat, and OSU is #1 across the board with one exception, in which they are an extremely close second.

There are only 4 other teams that are in the Top 20 in every Differential Defensive Stat.
  • LSU
  • VPI
  • Auburn
  • West Virginia
So that's 5 other teams in the top 20, only 1 of which manages to be in the top 10 across the board...

And OSU is #1 across the board, except for a close second in one stat.



One bad game does not mean that a defense with those numbers is vulnerable. It means they had one bad game that coincided with a great game played by the opponent.

With a month to get the game plan down, with a month to get it memorized so that you can move instead of think; I don't care who the Buckeyes play. They are going to make a statement. Take it to the bank.
