While LSU is obviously in a stronger conference, and was thereby held to a higher standard w.r.t. DPE; OSU's rating would have been much higher if not for several QBs being considerably more accurate vs. them than against the rest of their opponents. I think one could say with complete objectivity that Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois all had much more accurate passing from the QB position when they played us than on most days.

Long story short, OSU faced at least 3 QBs on their hottest day of the year (not always their most productive), and still was very near the top.

Does this mean that OSU has a better pass defense than LSU?

No, not in my opinion. When Dorsey is healthy, LSU has the best pass defense in the nation.

Differential Rushing Composite -- End of Regular Season

Composite Statistics

The next four posts will rank teams according to composite statistics. These stats combine an offensive differential stat and a defensive differential stat into a single number to rank teams according to their overall ability in a single facet of the game. The composite stats are:

Differential Rushing Composite (DRC): DRO divided by DRD
Differential Pass Efficiency Composite (DPEC): DPE (offense) divided by DPE (defense)
Differential Yardage Composite (DYC): DTO divided by DTD
Differential Scoring Composite (DSC): DSO divided by DSD

The Table below is for DRC.

Differential Rushing Offense (DRO) divided by Differential Rushing Defense (DRD)

Note that Ohio State has a lead of a full point over LSU, who is the #5 team in the nation in DRC.

It is entirely possible that Ohio State is only #1 in DPEC because they are compared against a lower standard by this stat. Differential stats compare you to the other teams on your opponents' schedules, so a down year for Big 10 quarterbacking made this an easy stat to dominate for the Buckeyes.

Oklahoma is in the top-heavy Big 12.

Florida is Great on offense and wretched on defense. The vulnerability of their defense makes it difficult to swallow their high ranking here.

If I had to pick a team that really has the best passing offense/defense combo, it would be hard to pick anyone but LSU.

Differential Total Defense

This is the second most important statistic that is posted on these pages. It is a single number that gives an indication of how good a team is at moving the ball AND at keeping the other team from doing the same.

Average DYC of LSU opponents: 1.046
Average DYC of OSU opponents: 1.045

Less than 1/10th of 1% difference...

Nevertheless, there is a bigger gap in DYC between #1 and #2 than between any other adjacent positions in the DYC rankings.

This is the 800 lb. Gorilla of stats. It distills to a single number; 1) how good each team is at scoring, and 2) how good they are at stopping the competition from scoring. And it takes into consideration the strength of each team's competition.

Here is where the difference in s.o.s. is a little clearer.

Average DSC for LSU opponents: 1.229
Average DSC for OSU opponents: 1.167

While a 5% difference is notable, it is not the overwhelming difference that is being touted in certain quarters. It is certainly not enough to account for the 27% difference between the DSC of Ohio State and that of LSU. The strength of the SEC is certainly reason enought to accept that LSU is stronger than the other teams ranked above them in DSC.

But the difference between Ohio State and the rest of the field cannot be explained away by strength of schedule. Especially when you consider that DSC takes s.o.s. into consideration.

While OSU may not have been in the strongest conference, this is proof positive that they were more dominant against the schedule in front of them than anyone else in the country. And it's not close.

DSA predictions for every team

As the long-time denizens of Buckeye Planet already know, and as many of the rest of you have either already guessed, or have already seen a version of on other sites; Differential Statistical Analysis (DSA) can be used to provide a "prediction" for any proposed game between Div. I-A (FBS if we must use the modern (pc) name) teams.

If you multiply the DSO of Team A by the SD of Team B, you get one prediction for the number of points that Team A will score on Team B. Another prediction can be had by multiplying the DSD of Team B by the SO of Team A. The same method can then be used to provide two "predictions" for Team B's scoring output for the game.

You can similarly "predict" everything about a game, statistically.

Before our new members take umbrage with these "predictions", it should be observed that no one here actually believes that these "predictions" actually prove anything. They are not offered as the last word on the subject. Rather, they are the first word; with much discussion to follow.
To actually provide a real and reliable prediction, it is necessary for better football minds than mine to analyze match-ups. This is simply a numerical tool that helps us to get a "50,000 foot", purely statistical view of the teams.
Now that we have the disclaimer out of the way...

The "predictions" for hypothetical games between Ohio State and every other team in Div. I-A were calculated. The teams were then ranked based on the average predicted margin of defeat at the hands of the Buckeyes. Yes, Ohio State is the only team that is favored over every other team, using this method.

The difference in LSU's ranks in efficiency and yardage would seem to indicate teams threw more often against them than normal. Obviously there could be many causes for this; great run D, led most games in second half, played more pass oriented teams, faster paced games led to more possessions/plays. Both team's opponents average about 220y/g passing (dividing PD by DPD) and both teams give up similar passing efficiency, though as noted the average LSU opponent pass offense was a bit better (128.67 vs 122.67).

On the rushing stats, would a differential yards-per-carry stat be relavent compared to the raw rushing yardage stats the way pass efficiency compares to raw passing yardage?

Also, when you calculate a teams differential is it the average each games' differential, or a composite differential dividing the teams season stat by the sum of their opponent's averages (or would that make a difference)?

I might post differential ypc at some point. As with anyone else, this is an extremely busy time of year for me, and I can't promise that I'll get around to it.

As for the question that I've underlined... that is a great question. Yes, it does make a difference; though a smaller difference than I expected.

Taking the composite differential by dividing each team's season stat(s) by the sum of the opponents' averages (removing head-head and lower-division games) has an effect that is different for different stats. To over-simplify the explanation, simply taking the average of each game's differential is a bit of an over-simplification. To get into more detail would open a can of worms that would; a) be incredibly complicated, b) be hotly disputed, and c) be boring, even to me. That's not a fun combination IMO.

Long story short, I used the season-composite method for all of the stats but one. For passing efficiency, I use a hybrid of this method because the spreadsheet program I use (the industry leader) cannot handle calculations that large in a single cell. (Yes, the calculations get very complicated when you do them for every team.)

Three-Year Best

I was looking around and I thought this was a really amazing stat. Looking back on the las 3 years, it seems obvious, but never really realized.

Ohio State BCS National Championship Game Notes - The Ohio State Buckeyes Official Athletics Site - OhioStateBuckeyes.com

Considering the 2005, 2006 and 2007 seasons, Ohio State has the best winning percentage in the nation at 33-4 (.892).

The top five:
- Ohio State.... (33-4) .892
- Southern Cal.. (33-5) .868
- West Virginia. (32-5) .865
- LSU........... (33-6) .846
- Boise State... (32-6) .842
- Texas......... (32-6) .842

And if it wasnt for the dropped pass in the endzone against Texas in 05 ( Hate looking back at that) it would have been consideration between tOSU and UT to take on USC.

Really, ever since the magic of 02 have we been truely removed from the NC picture only once(2004). Had we not lost to scUM in 03' we would have had the chance to defend our title. 2004, while the final two games were great, it was a young team trying to find itself.

05' I know we lost to Penn state as well, but we gave UT the best game they had all year. I dont give a damn about the Rose Bowl, we shut VY down on a far greater level than USC could ever dream. - Like I said, had it not been for a bobbled catch - its possible we may have had serious consideration for the title.

OK, I'm no threat to win the Nobel prize in Math, but if us and USC have the same W - L record, why the two differing %s.

I hope it's not an obvious answer

Differential Yards Per Carry

As requested, I have calculated the Differential Yards Per Carry (DYPC) for all D-IA teams.

DYPC is calculated for this table thus:

Yards per Carry (season average (D-IA competition only))

*divided by*

Opponents' Aggregate YPC-Against (D-IA competition only)

To calculate Opponents' Aggregate YPC-Against, ALL opponents yards (rushing defense) are divided by ALL opponents' carries (against). Doing it this way rather than taking an "average of averages" gives a more accurate representation of how good a team really is.

I normally leave the analysis for the end, but the interesting part of this table is how many spread offenses are at the top.

Stop back into this thread in 2 or 3 years and see if that still holds true.
