Official Statistical Analysis Thread

Here is what was most impressive to me:

upload_2016-9-5_9-10-31.png

Normally when you see a score like 77-10 a lot of the scoring was defensive scores and off of short fields from turnovers

As you can see 10 of the 11 TD's were offensive and only one was off a short field

They averaged 72.6 yards per drive on the 9 drives that led to TD's

Another way to look at it is 654 yards of offense on 9 drives that averaged starting from the OSU 29 yard line

Amazing

Lazy man's stat analysis: 1920 - 2015

Team Win pct Bowl Win pct
Ohio State .774 .478
Alabama .732 .602
Notre Dame .720 .486
Michigan .712 .477
USC .705 .650

When you take the three top programs in the Midwest and compare them with the best programs in South and the West you see a significant difference in bowl game performance. Either this proves the superiority of Southern and West Coast teams, or it suggests that playing "at home" in January is very helpful.

Given the importance of Bowl games in standings, recruiting and preseason rankings, why can't we get a Big Ten commish and the ND AD to push for playoff games in the north?

What it shows is that until 1976 the Big Ten only sent one team to a bowl game and that was the Rose Bowl.

OK, let's adjust. This time only bowl games from 1976 to 2015 in which a team/ Big Ten or ND, played a Southern or West Coast team in a Bowl Game not north of the Mason-Dixon line. Followed by Alabama and USC playing a Big Ten team or ND in a bowl game not north of the Mason - Dixon Line.
First their all games winning % and then the bowl win %
Ohio State .763 .370
Michigan .716 .472
Notre Dame .665 .368
Alabama .713 .769
USC .692 .705

Has Alabama ever won a game north of the Mason - Dixon line? If so, how about in Autumn or Winter?

They beat OSU in the old kickoff classic played in New Jersey in the late 80's (can't remember which year, '87 I think).

Iirc they went up to Happy Valley and worked up a #6 on the Pedsters a while back as well.

I thought scoring defense only counted points actually scored on the defense, in which case ours would be 5.3 points/game.

EDIT: Nevermind, I counted it wrong. It would be 7.67 points/game.
