Official Server Upgrade discussion

Not sure, but it's been ordered. Most likely everything else will arrive tomorrow afternoon, unless the case is on the UPS freight truck that pulls in here around 5:30 in the evenings.

Building only takes a couple hours, OS install doesnt take that long either. Then ya gotta test burn it for like 24 hours, tweak, configure, etc........after that part, no idea, depends on how moving and converting all the current stuff goes. I would say it should be up and runnin maybe by late next week. Sounds about right Dry? Clarity?

Mind you I am just guessing, wanna see how close I am. I really havent a clue what I am talking about, I just know how to sound like I do :wink2:

Well, I don't know what Clarity's (or anyone else's) expectations are/were, but as far as I am concerned, it'll be done "when it's done."

I'm not going to make any promises I can't keep or set deadlines I cannot reach. As it stands, nothing is assembled, nothing is tested ... for all I know the motherboard could be DOA, a hard drive could be damaged ... the R2 unit could have a bad motivator.

I might know a bit more tonight, though I've got a work-related dinner at 6:00 and it's my stepson's fifth birthday today. I'll have a better idea where we are by Friday, once everything is assembled, tested, retested, and the OS is installed.

I don't want to do a rush job, ship it to AZ, then have it crash in two weeks. :)

Hell that's what I was shootin for :)

Not tryin to rush you by any means, just givin you a hard time. Would rather have this thing up and runnin perfect before stashing it somewhere, and then having a rough time getting it fixed without major hassle.

What ended up being spent on the whole machine. Components and shipping at least.

Take the time to get it right (sounds like that's what you're doing anyway). I believe that was one of the big reasons for making a push during this fundraiser. Clarity wanted to time to do the job correctly. That meant getting the funds now so that the machine could be set up, tested, retested, shipped, migrate the site, test again, and again, and make sure everything is AOK before this coming football season. I know you (Dry & Brutus) are doing this the best way possible, so don't feel ANY pressure to speed up the process. Of course we would all like the new server online tomorrow, but we'd rather have a rock solid performer for this season and beyond.

Actually all I did was pitch in some info, try to get everybody to see the benefits to building rather than buying pre-built. Dry is doin all this work himself, dont wanna steal his thunder. As I said before though, I will be more than happy to lend a hand in whatever way necessary, even if Clarity would wanna give me a shell account on it in case of emergency and nobody is available to fix something. We'll get to that later though. I cant wait to see how this thing performs.

Good news, spoke to someone at Puregig.net/EasyNews.com (where we're colocated), and we're all good to go in terms of getting the new machine in place. As it turns out, the guy we're sending it to is a self-described big Buckeye fan. :) Anyway, Cinnamon (new name coming, I just have to touch base with one of our users first) is going to be moved to a new rack soon. This will mean some brief downtime, but the move will allow the old machine and the new one (name coming, just have to touch base with a different user first) to be mounted together on the same rack. Needless to say, I'm exceptionally excited about all of this.

In terms of what it all costs, I have to work out what we'll be paying one of the good techs in AZ to install it for us, move Cinnamon, deal with any issues, etc. So that's outstanding. Shipping costs from OH to AZ have yet to be determined. Whether or not I'll have to involve a 3rd party sysadmin to take care of some things on Cinnamon still has to be as well, so right now there are a lot of question-marks. In terms of a running total, I think we're somewhere in the neighborhood of $4300-4400 already spent. Will try and produce harder numbers later as some issues come into better focus.
