Official FIFA 2010 World Cup Discussion

The U.S's Clint Dempsey got injured in his game with Fulham today, and has cruciate knee ligament damage, it could keep him our of the World Cup. The US is so screwed. I hate life.
:(

Fuck.

I heard about the injury, but read that he walked off. Davies (highly doubtful), Onyewu (might be healthy, but not in form and an Onyewu out of form is a recipe for disaster in the center back spot), and now Dempsey?

Jermaine Jones still can't get healthy either. I realize all World Cup teams deal with injuries leading up to the summer, but the US seems to have gotten hit really hard. Add in the fact that our program as a whole isn't very deep and these injuries are decimating the team's chances.

Can we put Landon in some bubble wrap?

I am watching him play for Everton and gasping everytime he's tackled, believe me.

I don't even know what our lineup would look like without Dempsey, but I assume it would involve DaMarcus Beasley, which would just be awful.

Update- good preliminary news for the USMNT

Dempsey Injury Update

During the Blackburn Rovers fixture on Sunday 17 January, Clint Dempsey sustained moderate damage to a ligament in his right knee. Following the results of a scan, early indications are positive in that no operation is required. At this stage it is thought that the injury will not prevent him from featuring for Fulham, prior to the end of the season.

Whilst obviously disappointed, Clint is focused on his rehabilitation and will work hard, in line with medical advice, to return at the soonest opportunity.

Staying cautiously optimistic. I've seen this story often in regards to soccer injuries. Some little nicks and non-contact injuries are diagnosed as nothing (not that this is "nothing" just that it won't need surgery, supposedly). There can be a ton of setbacks with his rehab.

Oh well, best we can hope for, at the moment.

CHICAGO (Jan. 19, 2010) U.S. Men's National Team midfielder Clint Dempsey will not require surgery on an injured knee, according to a statement from Fulham Football Club following an MRI evaluation. Dempsey suffered moderate damage to a ligament in his right knee during Fulham?s 2-0 loss on Jan. 17 at Blackburn. The club expects Dempsey to be back in action prior to the end of the season.

The news about Clint's injury is positive, especially given the fact that he will not require surgery, said U.S. head coach Bob Bradley. We are confident that Clint will be ready to be an important part of our team during the World Cup."

The U.S. team medical staff has been in contact with Fulham on a daily basis, and will continue to monitor his progress in the coming months.

If Bradley is confident, then I am.

Not related to THIS World Cup, but FIFA President Sepp Blatter has indicated that the 2018 world cup will be held in a European country, meaning we're likely to see 2018 in England, and 2022 in the USA.

Too long of a wait for another world cup here :(

This makes me sad...

:shake: torn achilles for Beckham, I'm guessing that he might be done with soccer for good...

The Associated Press: Dr. says Beckham's Achilles' tendon totally torn

Dr. says Beckham's Achilles' tendon totally torn
By MARIUS TURULA (AP) ? 3 hours ago

TURKU, Finland - David Beckham's left Achilles' tendon was totally torn, and the doctor who performed the surgery said the England midfielder is expected to be out of action for about six months.

"He is doing well and the operation lasted just under an hour. It went very well," Dr. Sakari Orava told The Associated Press after the operation at the Mehilainen clinic in Turku, southwestern Finland. "He will have to take it very easy during the next two to three weeks or a month, and then he will continue with a recuperation program slowly. The foot won't take much strain for two to three months."

Orava also said it would be "four months to running" and another two months before playing.

Beckham's spokesman, Simon Oliveira, said the tendon was completely repaired, and he expected the 34-year-old midfielder to play again.
"David is expected to make a full recovery," Oliveira said.

The former England captain was injured in the closing minutes of AC Milan's 1-0 win over Chievo Verona on Sunday. He was on his second loan to the Italian club from Major League Soccer's Lox Angeles Galaxy.

Orava said Beckham planned to spend the night at the clinic and likely will leave Finland on Tuesday. A statement from AC Milan said Beckham will remain under observation for a few days.

"Tomorrow, Professor Orava will give his prognosis, and a precise rehabilitation plan will follow," Milan said...

Granted, I don't get paid to play sports, and don't have the same time and access to recover as quickly, but its been well over a year since my rupture(s) and I'm not close to 100% - probably closer to 70%-75% still... and hoops may be done forever.

I'm sure he'll keep playing at the club level for a few years, MLS and Serie A are like retirement homes for expired players. But yeah, his international career is likely over. Shame, he always made the World Cup more fun.

Beckham's role in the England squad was squarely that of a totemic luxury.

There is worse news for England - and none of it concerns Beckham. Cole and Lennon have not mended as fast as hoped.

As for Owen - he'll either shine or not, if he makes it. But I think he is past his full prime, well worn, sadly and badly injured too often. It is highly debatable whether he gets one of the 23 spots.
