Official FIFA 2010 World Cup Discussion

Steve, I really, really want to go. World Cup goes on at the same time as my graduation from college, and it would be a great trip for myself to take before starting up my career.

What would be a reasonable cost of travel, with tickets and hotel stay?

I really don't know. You see different ticket prices than I do, when you logon from the US.

Hotels are really booked up, but there would be lots of good bed and breakfast stuff around still I think. I suppose about $100 $150 a day all in, if you move quickly, depending on the exchange rate.

They are going to lay on busses and that kind of thing, which should help keep cost down.

Only if Charlize is there.

Oh, sorry. Really. I was reading the thread in order when I posted a moment ago.

Charlize will be here but I understand that she'll probably be camping outside in my garden. Lots of South African girls have that look, ask shetuck...

Did I mention that coming means bringing foreign exchange to a country that really needs it? I know you guys don't care about things like the beaches being topless, it's the football, helping the downtrodden, and world peace that move you, right?

Tim Howard, US Goalkeeper, just came up with an amazing save against a PK for Everton against Spurs in the 96th minute! He looked on amazing form right now and is in the top 3 of Premiership goalkeepers easily.

It will be great having him in goal against England, who have a penchant for long range bombing.

The penalty was hit straight down the middle, and bounced off his legs. I don't think he's a poor goalkeeper, but he's not in the top 3 in the Premier League (Reina, van der Sar, Jaaskelainen).

Not 2010 news, but wasn't sure this deserved it's own thread quite yet.

The U.S. Soccer Federation has cut the 27 proposed cities for their World Cup 2018/2022 bids down to the official 18 to be submitted. The list started out at around 70+ and has been taking cuts throughout the process. Only around 8-12 (likely the higher end) will be officially accepted and used when/if the World Cup comes to America. I believe Germany used the most stadiums in 2006 when they had 12 and even then that required special exemption as I believe the WC Committee prefers (enforces?) a maximum of 10.

Anyway...
Soccer Insider - A soccer blog by The Washington Post's Steve Goff

From today's announcement.....
IN: Atlanta, San Diego, Phoenix, Dallas, Seattle, Denver, Tampa, Indianapolis, Baltimore, Nashville, Kansas City, Houston, Miami, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Washington, Boston, New York/New Jersey.
OUT: Chicago, Charlotte, Detroit, San Francisco, Oakland, Cleveland, Jacksonville, Orlando, St. Louis. "I think there is a little Olympic fatigue" and FIFA requirements might have been difficult to meet, USSF President Sunil Gulati said of the stunning omission of Chicago's Soldier Field, which is about a mile from USSF headquarters and hosted the opening match of the 1994 World Cup.

Very interesting not having Chicago on there. Doesn't seem right. Honestly, they deserve it over Indianapolis (still very skeptical of soccer at Lucas Oil Stadium, and all domes for that matter: Dallas, Phoenix) and if not Indy, then certainly Atlanta (seriously, soccer in the Georgia Dome??? unless I'm missing a venue, or 1 is in the plans for the next 8-12 years). Again, no Chicago is just disappointing. No clue what the USSF is thinking, though they leave me like that a lot.

This list will be trimmed down if the US gets the bid, likely to 12 host cities. Stadiums for some of the areas are still up in the air (Dan Snyder in DC?) and a lot can change between now and then.

Do we even live past 2012 anyway? :p

Yeah, seriously :tongue2:.To my knowledge there is nothing in the works for a new venue, but in July the Dome played host to the World Soccer Challenge or something with AC Milan v. Club America and last June Mexico played Venezuela. Matches have drawn an average of 50,000 fans, with no local soccer team (The Silverbacks disbanded, and had separate facilities in east Metro ATL) and the Dome holds somewhere in the range of 70,000. There have been talks of trying to get an MLS team in Atlanta, and this past December, my University signed an agreement with the Atlanta Beat, which will bring a new women's pro soccer team to my University as we expand and build an 8,000 seat or so stadium and explore football possibilities. The market is here, it just hasn't been tapped. I don't know if Atlanta hosted any soccer matches when they hosted the Olympics in 1996.

I kinda hope not. Let's go down in style.

I'm very surprised Chicago is not on there.

I also don't like any games in a dome.
Doesn't surprise me one bit after all the negativity the people of Chicago were dishing out in regards to their Olympic bid. I could see some internal politics with the USOC asking the USSF to not have Chicago host... the USOC got a black eye from choosing Chicago as their host city then being the first voted out for the 2016 Olympics.
