With the 22nd pick of the second round the Chiefs select Manuel Ramirez out of Texas Tech -- a combo LG/LT with great strength and run/pass blocking skills.
Surely would have been nice to grab Gonzo this late but the Rams headed that plan off at the pass - anyway the WR position remains stocked even deep into the second round.
So, it was back to the Lines for the Chiefs.
On the Defensive line the biggest need is probably Defensive Tackle. On the Offensive Line - well pick your position, depth or new blood are needed.
A good looking athlete out there at Defensive Tackle is the ex-Gator product Marcus Thomas, though he comes with a lot of baggage. On the O-line a guard would be a good pick to step into Will Shields shoes. Now, at that position there is impeccable character available in the form of the under-sized but well coached Josh Beekman, but he is a little on the small side (6-1, 313) to be a fill-in for the veteran Shields (6-3, 320).
A great alternate in that spot would be Manuel Ramirez out of Texas Tech (6-4, 325) who was a force for 4 years as a Red Raider - in addition Ramirez could play LT if needed. Hence the Chiefs pick.
With the 26th selection of the 2nd round the New Orlean Saints select...
Ohio State QB Troy Smith.
The Saints feel that Troy is a hybrid of their last two quarterbacks in Brees and Brooks. Troy Smith has shown a great ability to grow as a quarterback and has improved steadily every year at Ohio State. The hopes are for him to study under Bree's a qb that he is very similiar to, and by the time Bree's contract is up or his bum shoulder falls off, Smith will be ready to step in without skipping a beat.
