There were a couple of paragraphs in today's dispatch that provided some of the info I have been waiting for relative to the OL two-deep battles.

RT - Schafer is battling Downing for the starting spot.
RG - Kne to start with Person and Coleman fighting for the second spot.
C - Mangold (no mention of who is second)
LG - Datish to start with Mitchum against John Conroy for second team.
LT - Sims (no mention of who is second)

Only names of scholarship players who are missing from that list and are not incoming Frosh are Barton and Tyree. I am guessing Barton is behind Sims and the loser at one of those guard spots is behind Mangold. Tyree could fill one of those spots when he comes back to the team as well.

Skinner and Rehring have to be in line for Redshirts.
 
If Barton had been healthy all spring, I'd be willing to bet he'd be starting at RT. In a few weeks I think he'll at least be the backup if not the starter.

I wouldn't count Schaffer out just yet, he is converted defensive lineman so you know that he is athletic. He fits the mold of the big, quick lineman that we are starting to accumulate.

I think its pretty safe to say that in general, aside from the true freaks of nature, most coaches don't want a freshmen starting on the OL. If it is happening it is usually:

1. because of injury
2. because of terrible depth.

either one isn't good. thus, I prefer to never see a freshman lining up early on.

We have 8 or 9 guys that can play on the O-line this year not counting the FR.


Schafer
Kne
Mangold
Datish
Sims

Downing
Barton
Coleman
Tyree when he gets healthy.

if one or two the the true FR play it will because they are good enough to play. I think it is ok if you have A FR play if he is good enough.

Before the season if someone told me that TOSU and Iowa would both have crappy o-lines, i would have asked them to share what they were smoking.

The biggest difference I could see is that Drew Tate was fine with getting out of the pocket and had no problem with throwing the ball away. JZ and TS both looked like they were chained to the oline and almost like they had been told to stay in the pocket no matter what...just frustrating as hell

The offensive lines under Jim Tressel have been subpar. The only year this wasn't glaringly obvious was 2002, when we had a gifted TB. Jim Bollman must be replaced for next year, regardless of his "Youngstown insider" status.

Bollman has got to go. They need to make pederson o-line coach. I was hoping the o-line would step up and play better this year but they are just to young and inexperienced. The d-line has been very disappointing also. These are the reasons we are losing. We are getting killed in the trenches on both sides of the ball.

Our line has been far below supar....... It has sucked the past 3 years. Without a DOMINANT back like Maurice Clarrett the Oline has made the other Dlines look like all americans......... No way this should happen at OSU.

WE should start our own campain here's the slogan

"Bollman Blows"
