This post is a little late but I haven't been able to get on BP until now.
Today on PTI, Oden was compared to Kevin Durant. They were favoring Durant because of his "steller" performance last night in the Oklahoma State vs. Texas game. They were saying Durant could be an NBA player, but they weren't giving anything to Oden, though they did give Oden a little bit of slack because he was playing with his left hand. What do you think about this?

I dont think they can compare the two right now because Oden isnt 100% healthy with his right hand. It wouldnt be fair to say Durant is better when Oden is playing basically with only his left hand. When he is healthy, then it would be fair to compare the two.

Durant is the focal point of the Texas team, he plays multiple positions for them and gets the ball in his hands a ton....

Oden is not 100% and he is limited to the center position.....

Its not a fair comparison other than both are very talented and both are going to be lottery picks.......

I don't know....

Durant is helped by the talent around him as is Oden...although I think Durant has a bit more of an outside touch than Oden does, I think one on one, Oden would win the inside battle....

Right, i would say Durant does have a better outside shot but we havent been able to really see Oden take the outside shot (if he ever does) because he doesnt have the right hand to shoot his best with. But inside i would definately take Oden over Durant for size and toughness.

Doug Gottleib siad Durant was the best player in CBB, but Oden was the better pro prospect.

He compared Durant to KG and said Durant's a much better shooter than KG was at the same age.

Interesting thread idea...I like it!

As for now, you are correct that we are comparing apples to oranges since Oden has his ailments. That being said, look at Texas's top 8 scorers...ALL underclassmen and SIX are freshman! Very similar to our squad only even younger. The fact that he's averaging 24.5 points a game and 11.1 rebounds is quite impressive, especially with a lack of leadership. He reminds me of putting a team on one's shoulders like Michael Redd did for us years back.

Of Texas's 5 players seeing 20 minutes or more of PT a game, 3 are 6'2" and shorter, so he's going to have many rebounds. We have a taller squad so you're going to see more guys attacking the glass.

Durant plays 32.8 minutes a game and gets 24.5 points, 11.1 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game. Oden plays 29.1 minutes, so say Oden played 32.8 and his stats would be: 16.8 points, 11 rebounds, and 4.4 blocks per game. Durant leads in points, they are virtually tied in boards, and Oden leads in points.

I'd say at this point, Durant has the slight edge. By the end of the season, it could go either way. Get Greg healthy and you might see him score more and get more looks. I'm not sure how great a defender Durant is because I've never seen him play, but Oden is an animal. As for who is more important to their team, I'd say it's about even. Texas has 3 other big guys but they are all FR and SO. Our other bug guys are much more experienced.
