Could a decisive win over the Nittany Lions at their place put is in the top 3, if not the top 5?

No way. Top five is a distinct possibility, but no chance on the top three. As much as I'd like to see it happen and I know we're worthy, but there's no way they're gonna put us above an undefeated team. By next Saturday there will likely still be more than three undefeated teams in the top ten competing for those top spots. USC, Texas, and Va Tech will still be up there. With Wisconsin, Alabama, etc still unbeaten. We should eclipse the top five though. And I'd love to see a few more ACC teams go down.

All we have to do is win out and everything will fall into place.

Do you think so? I hope, but I am skeptical.

The way I see it, Texas has to lose 2 games for us to jump them. I guess it's possible that if we rise all the way to #3 and then Texas loses, we could jump them, but I think it wouldn't be fair (in fact, I'd be livid if that happened and the roles were reversed). And, frankly, I don't see Texas losing one game the rest of the season, more less two. The Big 12 is incredibly weak--some of the supposed best teams in the conference are turning out to be pretty weak: we all know OU's troubles, Iowa St. lost this weekend to a very mediocre Nebraska team, Okla. St. was absolutely pounded by Colorado, Colorado looked very bad in the Miami game, and A&M BARELY got by Baylor at home. I think Texas's most difficult game of the remaining season was the game that they won this past weekend at Missou. Accordingly, I think Texas will remain above us all year.

That leaves USC (b/c I think the rest of the teams above us (Fla. St., Georgia, and Va. Tech will all lose yet this year). I am sticking to my claim before the beginning of the season that they'll lose at some point this year (Cal or ND seems most likely). However, I'm not sure that they'll fall below us with just one loss. The only way is that if we rise up at least a spot or two before they lose. Remember the media's love affair with USC--I think it may haunt us in the future.

As I said, I hope I'm wrong and you're right, but I am a little skeptical.

If Texas and USC both lose and tOSU takes care of business there is no doubt in my mind we will be in Pasadena. Voters will remember that Troy Smith was rusty in the Texas game, and I've heard lots of them say right now we are one of the 4 best teams in the country. Better than FSU and Georgia, who are undefeated. I agree with you that those 2 and VaTech will lose, and after USC loses we are on our way to a rematch with the Longhorns.

Who do you think will beat USC? The more I think about it, the more I don't think it will be Cal. Although they're ranked high this season, I think it's the same old story with them--they have a good record only b/c they don't play anyone besides USC every year (as they showed in last year's Holiday Bowl). Maybe they have an outside shot, b/c the game's in Berkley. However, I think ND is our best bet--the game's in South Bend, and I think Weis can outsmart Carroll.

I agree that Notre Dame is the best shot, but I'm not sure it will be them. It's not that I see someone good enough to beat them, it's just that I don't see them being able to go undefeated. It's a hunch or gut feeling more than anything, they just don't look like they have "it" this year.
