Ohio State's Hartline understands national criticism

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- When Brian Hartline hears the coast-to-coast Buckeye bashing, the nearly nationwide desire not to have Ohio State return to the national championship game after back-to-back flops, the junior wide receiver laughs it off.

But he understands where the ire comes from.

"You're in high school and you know that kid that keeps winning all the time?" Hartline said. "You kind of wish they don't win because you're sick of listening about them winning. But it doesn't mean they're not good."

The Buckeyes know they're good. They also know why they're so disliked around the country.

Ohio State football
Hartline has high hopes for '08
New crop of receivers looks promising to fill third and fourth slots

COLUMBUS: After the season he had last year, Ohio State wide receiver Brian Hartline won't be sneaking up on any defenses or special teams this season.
Hartline, a native of North Canton, became part of a receiving tandem ? with running mate Brian Robiskie ? that often gave opposing teams fits last season.
The speedy and lanky Hartline had 52 receptions for 694 yards and six touchdowns in his sophomore season, occasionally benefiting from the increased attention that Robiskie received. Adding to his resume, Hartline evolved into a legitimate threat as a punt returner, running 20 back for 229 yards and a touchdown ? a 90-yarder against Kent State.
None of that matters to him this year. An outgoing, gregarious sort, Hartline isn't shy when it comes to addressing what's in front of OSU with respect to expectations.

Buckeyes' Hartline receiving plenty of praise

by Doug Lesmerises Thursday August 28, 2008, 9:27 PM

Terry Gilliam/Associated PressBrian Hartline, with fellow OSU receiver Brian Robiskie (left), has won high praise from his coaches for his work in practices leading up to Saturday's season opener against Youngstown State.

COLUMBUS -- Watch Brian Hartline. He has a perfect preseason behind him and quarterback that trusts him ahead.
"He's been a 10," Ohio State receivers coach Darrell Hazell said of the junior's practice performance the last month. "He's excellent in every phase of his game right now. I'm really proud of how he's worked."
Hartline's favorite phase is when the Buckeyes go three wide and he lines up inside in the slot. That's where Anthony Gonzalez made so many timely catches as the go-to guy for quarterback Troy Smith two years ago. Hartline can feel that same type of connection developing with quarterback Todd Boeckman, now that they're both entering their second seasons as starters.

It was just the spring game, but the biggest thing I noticed was how quickly Todd locked onto Brian. It was almost a bad thing. It shows his confidence in him as a receiver though.

I think Hartline easily has the most catches this year for tOSU.

Sounds like a pretty good bet right about now. Hartline just exudes confidence and leadership out there! Gotta love this kid.

Hartline should be disappointed with his play yesterday. It was mediocre at best. Missed blocks and dropped passes are what come to mind with his performance yesterday. It's not like him. Overall the team just didn't do the fundamentals yesterday. Hopefully it was a wake up call.

Absolutely. Yesterday was his worst performance in S&G.

Agreed, I thought the same of Robo. Looked lost, disengaged. Sanzo and Ray seemed much more solid and focused. Knowing Brian, I doubt he'll show like this ever again.

This was certainly the game to get that out of their system. Let's hope they all did exactly that.
