OC/WR Coach Brian Hartline (Official Thread)

Which Buckeye had the greatest impact on the Ohio State history of the position he played?

  • Brian Hartline

  • Other (This is the wrong answer)

Please explain. Maybe he can make the jump, but how wouldn't it help?

Being a play-caller is a special skill….some guys specialize in it.

But being an elite defensive or offensive coordinator is NOT necessary to be an elite HC and there are literally hundreds of recent examples to get into.

Jon Harbaugh at Baltimore was promoted from Special Teams Coach bc he was elite at game management and motivation.

Dabo went from WR coach/used car salesman to HC and promptly won (2) Natty’s

Our own Urban Meyer never held a job higher than WR coach prior to becoming Bowling Green HC. He got the job bc he was known as a relentless recruiter.

Even James Patrick Tressel never held a coordinator position before being named HC at Youngstown St.

Like, people need to let go of what they think is conventional and necessary and recognize the tectonic plate under their feet. There are a shitload of OC’s Hartline could hire that would give us better game plans than we got in nearly every game we played this year…nobody can debate that.

Can Hartline manage the clock better?? He can’t be worse. Can Hartline recruit the entire roster better…I’d argue yes. Does Hartline understand the Michigan vs OSU rivalry better? Resounding yes. Would we worry about Hartline to NFL every year? Resounding No.

Listen, if Day shits bed against TN this is a no brainer..if Day somehow wins, he lives another Day….but the leash is so short. A majority of Day’s success is directly tied to Hartline’s recruits. Imagine where OSU would be without Hartline’s WR room???

I agree 100%

As long as Hartline hired the correct coaches around him there’s no reason he wouldn’t do well. He for sure would get the school similar to Tress and Urban. Hopefully Ryan gets it done but if he loses at home in the first round that’d be tough to overcome.

This is nonsense. And I love Hartline. But Ohio State somehow existed before him.

I just don’t see the southern talent coming to OSU without the pedigree of Hartline…

Hartline is a freak….

I hate to say it, but just wait for the day we have Ryan Day as HC but Hartline isn’t here.

our recruiting classes go from top 5 to 15-ish. It’s that impactful.

I'd elevate Hartline to HC over Day in a hartbeat.....word play intended.

If he leaves OSU, offensive skill position recruiting is cooked, IMO.

Here’s a more in-depth analysis of where I’m at.

-Hartline is an Ohio kid

-The fact a Big 12 team like WVU is likely offering the position to him is very telling…..more offers and better teams will be in play by end of this carousel

-Hartline leaving will assuredly dampen multiple areas on the offensive side of the ball both in recruiting and retaining current players…..it’s important to note the “chicken and egg” component of our QB recruiting….how much is Day being a good QB coach and how much is the elite talent at WR??

-I think you can immediately look at Jeremiah Smith plus multiple recruits/ other players on roster as transfer portal candidates….Inrecognize this shouldn’t influence the decision a tremendous amount but we could see a cascading effect where the roster is left in a much different place for 2025 than expected….and is Day the guy we want in that scenario?? What if Sayin leaves if Smith decides to bolt?? It *could be a disaster, IMO.

I personally think this is a no-brainer. Keep the Ohio kid home and give him the resources Clemson gave Dabo when he was elevated from WR coach to HC…..and Brian isn’t an idiot…he’ll use the transfer portal just fine.

He’s ready….

I also think he realizes his natural progression is not to a play-caller. He’s an elite WR coach and recruiter. Taking a coordinator job isn’t going to help his progression….

Just let him take a HC position, hire an elite staff, and let him cook.

A drop to 15 assumes LJ Jr., Frye and Marotti stay for an unthinkable additional year. Hopefully Day can hit home runs with their replacements like he did with Knowles.

Obviously recruiting takes a hit.....but you said we were cooked at offensive skill positions. Like, come on

I'm like you, I think the brand will sell itself no matter the coach and that OSU will always be pretty high up there in recruiting/portal talent acquisition.

OTOH, I look at a position group being recruited at a near MAC level clip that simply doesn't recruit like the rest of the position groups under that brand and remind myself that the right fuck up can fuck up anything.

Remind me, did we ever have quality offensive personal prior to Hartline coaching (not playing) ? 8D

So we're saying, elevate Hartline to HC, demote Day to OC, demote Chip to OL coach, and get rid of Frye? Looks feasible, no? Might make tOSU stronger. And here I was hoping that Harline was interviewing to brush up on his interview skills. Always took a couple of 'trys' before interviewed for real. Not saying it helped, but mentally was more prepared.
