OC Chip Kelly (Official Thread)

How bad was Ohio State’s game plan vs. Michigan? Where Chip Kelly went wrong and what’s next

I don’t know the intricacies of Kelly’s career enough to know if Saturday was the worst called game he’s ever had, but I know that if he was hoping to get a call from the NFL this offseason, those chances just took a hit. He was completely outclassed by Michigan defensive coordinator Wink Martindale.

Everybody knew that the only way Ohio State could lose that game is by letting the Michigan defensive front dominate. Guess what it did?

Last week, on The Athletic’s “Until Saturday” podcast, my colleague David Ubben asked me if I thought Ohio State would stretch the field instead of trying to run into a brick wall over and over again. I told him the Buckeyes would run into the brick wall over and over again. That’s because that’s what Kelly has done this year.

The problem is, he hadn’t faced a defensive line as good as Michigan’s all year. Throughout the season, he was able to mix things up with counters, sweeps, stretches and RPOs to move the defensive line. He did that a few times on Saturday and the runs popped for big yardage, like Quinshon Judkins’ 15-yard run on fourth down, which came off a heavy look that seemed like a quarterback sneak was coming.

If, as @Thump says, the wind was extreme in 2nd half
or
If Howard was concussed (and shouldn't have gone back in despite we don't have a backup who can pass)
else this is the worst brain fart of Chip Kelly's life

It was obvious from the get go, our running game was not working
so, if I was the OC I would have put up 60 passes...
and even if my QB1 had to be replaced, I would have used Sayin to keep slinging it

My personal opinion is that I can't believe that Kelly and Day were that stupid. I think that Howard was hurt, perhaps concussed, and they were getting to him badly. That said, if they had run up early leads in game and stopped this "chance to win the the 4th quarter" silliness in their easier games at least, they could have played multiple quarterbacks. If only the 2's and 3's got some playing time.

this is where the start slow and keep the starters in all game bites us in the .... Sayin shoulda burned his red shirt this year getting reps to get ready for next year or taking over if Howard goes down... but instead we got Brown, who you already recruited over with Howard & Air & Sayin & St Claire ..... sooo why give him the backup reps... Questionable decision making for the last few years

Not targeting Smith once in the last 27 minutes of the game is one of the most baffling things Ive ever seen. I get it they had a bracket safety on him or whatever. Is he the first Wr that's ever happened to? It was completely unexpected and unsolvable? They were doing their best not to let him win the game, b/c he is our best player, which is what high school teams do. Ohio State goes with reverse strategy of "we will give your best players every opportunity to win the game for you." Aka the line up Tuf Borland in man coverage against Devonta Smith strategy.

Shit. Look at last year. McCord leaves before the cotton bowl and neither Brown nor Keinholz looked remotely prepared to step in. The offense in that game was a fucking disgrace. Tressel and Urban routinely has 1 or even 2 backups ready to play if needed. Fortunately Stroud and Fields stayed healthy. Will did all the way until (presumably) Saturday, but if he was hurt and that's the reason for the chicken shit play calling...what the FUCK is going on? If his health was severely impacting your ability to run your offense to the point that you couldn't do anything but run the same 3-4 stupid plays that weren't getting anywhere, you have utterly failed to prepare your team.

2014 - Braxton goes down preseason. JT Barrett steps in and plays like a Heisman contender as a RS-FR. He gets hurt in The Game and little used Cardale Jones steps in and leads you to a national fucking championship.
2017 - JT Barrett gets hurt again in The Game, RS-FR Dwayne Haskins comes in with the outcome still in doubt and puts it on ice.

We are nowhere near that right now and that is a HUGE failure on the staff's part to properly prepare.

I see that analysis and will raise with the following...

JK Dobbins gets hurt against Clemson, and our entire offensive gameplan swirls down the drain as Master Teague only has a command of 25% of the playbook.

Trey Sermon gets hurt in CFP Championship and yet again, the offense is lost as it turns to a more veteran Master Teague. It's rumored many offensive "sets" they worked into gameplan against Bama were unable to be utilized bc only Sermon was practicing the reps.

I don't know....there's just something "off" with Day IMO....They just feel so unprepared when a singular issue hits during a game. Great coaches instill confidence and have a plan....I feel like Day panics and his teams do as well.

Yeah, there's some real "attention to detail" stuff that's slipping through the cracks.

Micromanagement and over-fixation?
