Observations from the Barcalounger

excellent read....

good points, as usual, JeffBuck......

I was thinking the same thing about how will the 2006 team be compared to this 2005 team? I'm starting to agree with you....OSU will be better even after the loss of the great LB corp.....

I think our losses will big and will take some time from which to recover:

1. Mangold....among the best C in the nation hands down
2. Kudla....a true beast with awesome combo of speed/power/experience
3. Hawk.....'nuff said
4. Carpenter....a freakish athlete with experience and smarts
5. Green....he's made a big impact on the rushing defense...great senior yr

the rest of the departing seniors are very good, but won't be as difficult to recover from as much as I had originally thought.....PLEASE, I'm not bashing these guys as they are kicking butt a lot but I wouldn't call them "difference makers".....

Simms......we have some good to great OL waiting in the wings
Schlegel.....the more I see of him the more he sticks out (negatively)
Salley.....great hitter, but mediocre pass coverage skills
Holmes (jr.)....weird to say, but I think we'll be fine
Hamby.....tough luck on top of a tough Sr season

From what I see, the slow but steady progress of Troy Smith will make whomever replaces Holmes as well as the rest of the WR corps look better and better. Buying time with his athleticism will be a deadly weapon next year as TG2 will still be blazing fast....and Gonzo will still be a great route runner.....Lyons/Dukes/Hartline/Hall will probably look like another in the line of All BigTen WR to come out of OSU

Pittman....what more is there to say other than "damn glad to see ya' boy!"...he is not just a decent RB, but is developing into a very good running back in the mold of a Anthony Davis, DeShawn Wynn, Mike Hart type of back that is good enough to make Ds respect the run....and add to that the development of Troy Smith, OSU's offense may be among the leaders in the NATION next year.......but first let's see how he does vs Michigan (a much improved D from last year) and a high quality bowl opponent.

Ginn......it's weird how he disappeared in the beginning of this season....just like he was somewhat non-existent early last year. Of course this year he did much better early but due to unfortunate and stupid penalties, his stats didn't show it.......remember, he had a huge kick return vs Texas called back as well as vs Iowa........had these not been called back, we may be looking at 7-1 instead of 6-2. Ginn will force teams once again to kick away from him or even accept the 35 yard penalty on kickoffs....he is THAT good.

I'm starting to think that OSU will be in a great position next year.....IF WE CAN GET PAST TEXAS......to be a contender in the NC race. But that is a HUGE if. I actually see our Defense being faster next year than this year....and that is say a lot.

Wilson/Patterson/Pitcock/Richardson
D'Andrea/Freeman/Laurinitis
Jenkins/Youboty/Everett/O'Neal

....there's not a player in that group that isn't very fast for their position

Ginn/Frost/Barton/Datish/Cordle/Downing/Boone/Gonzalez
Smith/Johnson/Pittman

......again, improvements of returning starters will outweigh the loss of the graduating studs

I think if you expect us to replace the LB corp, Mangold and Holmes without missing a beat because we have Troy Smith back then you are setting yourself up for some major dissapointment.

Those new LB's will be good, maybe even great someday but they wont be as good their first year as Carpenter and Hawk were their SR years...it just won't happen.

Holmes is the best WR we have and his combination of speed, route running, hands and mental toughness also will not be instantly replaced by a first year player.

I would caution against getting to carried away about what you see from Smith against the IU's and Minnesota's of the world without remembering how how he looked vs the PSU and UT's of the world (it wasn't all rust).

To me if any of the guys you expect to just come in and make a seemless transition next year were that good, they'd be pushing for PT this year and none of them are.

let me clear....

I didn't say we "wouldn't miss a beat".....but from what I see, the offense will be much better in early 2006 than it was in early 2005.......that may be enough to overcome the loss of Hawk/Carpenter/Schlegel.........until the replacements get up to speed (mind you, I'm saying that the 2006 D doesn't have to be as good as the 2005 D because the 2006 O will be better)

the Texas game looms as the big obstacle in the way of that progress toward being a NC contender. In my opinion, OSU will probably fight gallantly vs the Horns but come up short as VY says he will be back in '06.

...otherwise, the BigTen won't be as good next year in my opinion because Penn State, Michigan State, and Northwestern will all be down due to the losses of their senior star QBs.....Iowa will again be a tough test...but the BigTen will once again come down to THE GAME.

It's hard to believe that losing SH won't hurt, because it will hurt. But I think with the development of TG2 and Gonzo and the improvement of Troy Smith to the point where he may be able to beat teams simply throwing the ball next year....has me thinking we'll be a lot better next year than previously thought.

...I agree with your notion that Troy isn't a great QB yet.....wholeheartedly. We've beaten up on some weak defenses...and will have weak Ds the next 2 weeks. That's why I said that how Troy does vs Michigan will be the true measuring stick of how he has progressed.

The Offense showed up when we needed it.

The Defense made adjustments and did what they had to do in the second half.

Playing in a Dome sucks. Only two of our guys made the trip last time we played there in 2001. Its a rough adjustment to make.

Teddy seems to thrive in the domes though. After his performance in the Army All-Star game and the Alamo Bowl and then yesterday, I'd say its almost unfair to let a kid with his speed play on that surface.

Holmes continues to prove he is a first round pick and will be very rich this time next year.

Sims got used as a turnstile a few times. The Gopher D-line seemd to remember he has played Tackle for a few years and used his natural tendencies against him. Sims is still learning to play Guard. He'll do fine at the next level.

Pittman runs with an attitude we only saw briefly from Ross. He plays like he wants to gain yards, body damage be damned. Ross never played the same after he twinged his knee as a Junior.

Gonzo has great hands. I keep hearing how good he is "as a third WR". That's crap. Next year, as Target #2, he'll continue to shine. He runs good routes, finds holes in the zone and runs like a gazelle once he secures the ball.

We are going to miss Kudla next year. But some team in the NFL will be glad to have him. I said before the season started, if he stays healthy, he's gonna be ragdolling bitches. That bitch's name yesterday was Laurence Maroney. Don't feel bad Larry, you're in good company.

Its amazing how good the running game can be when the defense is concerned about getting beat deep. First play from scrimmage should have been six points. The D-Coor took notice and Pittman reaped the rewards. 180+ and two scores. And we still threw the ball effectively. That was game planning at its finest.

We always talked about the defense bending, not breaking. We gave up 500 yards to a home team with two weeks to prepare, 16 of our local kids on their roster with something to prove and a chip on their shoulder. But in the meat of the game, we gave up 24 points. Not too bad. But as someone else said, Illinois better update their wills. This defense is going to bring the wood next week.

Troy Smith got a little more respect from me yesterday. He stood tall in the pocket, read his progressions and took the hit after he got off a clean pass. He took a shot, gashed his chin and never missed a play or a beat. Well played Troy.

Don't read into Boeckman getting garbage time over Zwick. Tressel knows you need a pair and a spare. When the chips are down, Zwick is our #2 guy.

Great game! Best yet! And on the road!

Minny was in "man" all day yesterday. Making Troy's reads, simple! We won't see much" man "the rest of the year! Don't get too excited!

The "O" line played great, yesterday! Pittman is a very good back! Glad to see he got some TDs!

Does Glen Mason have hemorrhoids? Sure looked like it!

ABC was so pulling for an upset!

Shots of the fore lorn Minny fans were priceless! :slappy:

Fantastic Game..

From the first play of the game on, i just saw something in their eyes that told me to hang on, its gonna be a big game..I was so impressed with how the game was played..Our offense is really coming together.

Ginn, Holmes, Smith, Pittman, Gonzo, man them guys are studs..They are awesome to watch, and they proved that on Saturday..

Congrats to Pittman..Welcome to the endzone..You deserved those 2 td's, and we should have gotten you a TD much sooner...You were a freakin stud on saturday..You get the game ball

Smith, man im tellin you, your gettin better every week. Kudos to you..Damn good passing..

Ginn..I could watch you all day my friend..I need to say nothing else..

Good write up!! Yesterdays game was fun to watch for a lot of reasons, and it was nice to see our weapons get the opportunity to display their skills. I am not taking anything away from the win but it is Minnesota. The things that pleased me the most were the 0 Turnovers!!! The next thing is that most pleased me was the fact that were no momentum killing penalties. There were some penalties but none of those that just killed a drive. Good game all around. I have been high on Pittman all year and it was great to see him take off and finally get into the endzone. Smith, still has a ways to go, but that was a great game by him.

Defense – Act I

I learned one thing today. I can live with an ineffective Offense much easier than I can an ineffective Defense. That first half hurt. Minnie’s line was manhandling ours. Maroney was the real deal.

And I just gotta know. According to the stats Minnesota completed passes to 9 different receivers. Did Youboty have coverage responsibility on all of them? Cause #26 was in the picture every time they threw the ball. I am very anxious to hear ‘the rest of the story’ about Ashton today.

Some of that was downright embarrassing. Did we find the OC we want and is he living in Minneapolis?

Defense – Act II

I feel better now. THAT is how you are supposed to handle Maroney. Passing I can live with. We have done that all year. But we have to stop the run. That is who we are.

Still, I am disappointed. I don’t know if it was lack of game prep, not being ready to play, or a brilliant Minnesota game play. You just aren’t supposed to be able to do that to our D. Not 24 points when it counted. Bend but don’t break, remember? Too many snapping noises today.

Ohio Kids in Minnesota

Lots made of that this week. Several Ohio kids – many underclassmen – contributing for the Gophers. Even Maroney wanted to be a Buckeye.

We have the POY from Minnesota and he is playing mop up.

They wanted it bad. Hate to tell you guys, but you got your asses kicked. When it counted, late in the game when it was time for the big kids to step up, you got your asses kicked.

Nuff said.

Play of the Game

First play of the 4th quarter. Third and one for OSU. Gophers know it is a huge play and the OL just pushes them two yards backwards. It was clear at that point that Minnie was finished.

Woddy Bobbles

I bought several of the original Woody Bobbles from Donatos and you don’t even want to know how much I made selling them. So, today we had pizza for lunch and I had them bring one of the new ones along. Anybody else have one yet?

Where did that head come from? Looks as much like Mark Richt as Woody Hayes. I think maybe that neighbor kid from Toy Story I got hold of it.

Turnovers

Plus one! Do you believe it? Zero turnovers on O. No interceptions. No fumbles. No dropped returns (thanks Gonzo). Plus one. Sweet.

Ginn

224 total yards today. To late to revive his Heisman campaign?

Boone

More and more plays are following #75.

Pittman

Sophomore folks. Excellent chance he goes over 1k next week. When is the last time we got this kind of production from a Sophomore? With the bowl game he could have a shot at 1400 yards (especially if he keeps his eye on #75). It may be premature to talk about that total, but only five players have ever gotten 1400 yards in a season for OSU.

Two more years or Pittman. And the worst thing that can happen is Chris Wells takes his job away. What a battle that is shaping up to be.

BTW – anybody want to do an even up trade for Sutton right now?

Boeckman

That ought to give the message boards something to speculate about this week.

Smith

There was a strong argument to make a switch not so long ago. Had we done that we would still be looking for a QB. Troy is looking better every week. He is flawed, but every college QB has flaws. Next year the kid so many of us wanted back on the bench is going to get mention in AA discussions.

Offense?

I am almost convinced something is starting to happen here. Even allowing for the quality of the opponents 121 points in three games is impressive. And two of those were road games. Last year even when we ‘found ourselves’ down the stretch we never hit 40 points. The Minnesota D is weak, but that is the most anybody has hung on them all season.

I have been whining with the loudest of them, but maybe we already have an OC.

Or did we finally just execute?

I have to say this great post. You called it right on the nose this time. Keep it up!

Our DL was getting pushed around early by their OL, and thus we were left open for the passing game (run sets up the pass). In addition, Youboty just had a bad game (he bit badly on the run fake at least once and just looked lost a lot of the time). The DL started getting a little bit of penetration around the middle of the second quarter, and once that started to happen, Minnesota was dead meat. From their TD early in the 2nd quarter to tie the game at 17-17 until their meaningless TD at the end of the game against our bench, the Gofarts managed just 196 total yards and seven points on eight drives in 40 minutes. Our defense has historically made great second half adjustments...we just need to make sure that we don't give up too much too early in our last three games, especially against Northwestern and Michigan.

To all of you that are saying that this isn't a great defense...1st off...the last drive was against the 2nd team...so the 1st team defense gave up 24 points, and only 7 in the second half. Sure...Youboty was schooled a couple times...but he bounced back, kept playing hard, and it took some AMAZING plays by Minnesota to even keep up with us. Their recievers made some amazing plays when the ball was just thrown up for grabs. Then a few minutes into the 2nd quarter, the defense started coming up with some big plays, and really stepped up. The defense played great. If you just look at stats, sure they gave up a lot of yards. But if you look at the game, the defense started out slow, but stepped it up as the game went on, and really slowed down Minnesota. Our defense wore down the Minnesota offense. This defense has played good ALL YEAR..against GREAT offenses. Even though they came out slow against Minnesota...it still doesn't erase the year they have had? Our defense has stepped up against some REALLY good offenses, Texas, Iowa, MSU, and now Minnesota...and even though we didn't win the Texas or PSU game, our defense did EVERYTHING possible to give our offense tons of chances to win those games...and now that the offense is starting to roll, this team is really starting to look like one of the best in the country.

Yes the defense struggled in the first 20 minutes of the game...but after Minnesota's first four drives, here were the rest of the drives that Minnesota had against our 1st string defense...

<TABLE class=tablehead cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=3><TBODY><TR class=oddrow vAlign=top><TD></TD><TD>2</TD><TD>01:14</TD><TD></TD><TD>3 plays</TD><TD>5 yards</TD><TD>Punt</TD></TR><TR class=evenrow vAlign=top><TD></TD><TD>2</TD><TD>03:01</TD><TD></TD><TD>9 plays</TD><TD>43 yards</TD><TD>Turnover on Downs</TD></TR><TR class=oddrow vAlign=top><TD></TD><TD>3</TD><TD>01:22</TD><TD></TD><TD>3 plays</TD><TD>7 yards</TD><TD>Punt</TD></TR><TR class=evenrow vAlign=top><TD></TD><TD>3</TD><TD>02:31</TD><TD></TD><TD>7 plays</TD><TD>48 yards</TD><TD>Turnover on Downs</TD></TR><TR class=oddrow style="FONT-WEIGHT: bold" vAlign=top><TD></TD><TD>3</TD><TD>01:32</TD><TD></TD><TD>5 plays</TD><TD>80 yards</TD><TD>Rushing Touchdown</TD></TR><TR class=evenrow vAlign=top><TD></TD><TD>3</TD><TD>02:29</TD><TD></TD><TD>3 plays</TD><TD>-1 yards</TD><TD>Punt</TD></TR><TR class=oddrow vAlign=top><TD></TD><TD>4</TD><TD>01:11</TD><TD></TD><TD>3 plays</TD><TD>8 yards</TD><TD>Fumble</TD></TR><TR class=evenrow vAlign=top><TD></TD><TD>4</TD><TD>02:39</TD><TD></TD><TD>6 plays</TD><TD>4 yards</TD><TD>Punt

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

That's 7 points in the last 8 drives. Only 194 total yards in 39 plays.

Minnesota had A LOT of chances in this game because our offense was quick striking...and also the field position battle actually allowed them to get more yardage...AND TG2s 100 yard return gave them the ball right back. I will admit the defense came out flat...but you also have to realize the Buckeyes were up 10-0 and 17-7...and maybe our defense got a little lax due to the big lead early...but when Minnesota came back to make it 17-17...the defense realized it needed to clamp down, and did. As after it was 17-17 the Buckeyes outscored Minnesota 28-7 in almost 3 quarters. That's the defense that we have. It's the defense that we have had all year. Minnesota is one of the best offensive teams in the country. 18 minutes can't overshadow a whole season. I LOVE our defense. We force teams to beat us with the pass because nobody can have sucess running the ball. Right now I would still wouldn't trade our defense for any defense in the country.

I didn't read it...I got about 1/3 of the way thru this thread and stopped reading and needed to post. Here are some other stats though...for all of you who want to contest our defense. Out of the 8 teams we have played...6 of them are in the top 40 in total offense in the country.

Michigan State 3rd
Texas 6th
Minnesota 7th
Miami, Ohio 21st
Penn State 30th
Iowa 36th

And these teams would have even better stats if they didn't have to play Ohio State's defense. Look at these numbers!!!

Minnesota is averaging 501/ypg we gave up 578 against them...that's +77 (only time all year we've given up more yards against a team than they usually get...and if you read my post before, if this is the worst the defense plays all year, that's pretty darn good.)

Michigan State is averaging 532/ypg we gave up 456 against them...that's -76

Texas is averaging 502/ypg we gave up 382 against them...that's -120

Miami, OH is averaging 451/ypg we gave up 298 against them...that's -153

Penn State is averaging 428/ypg we gave up 195 against them...that's -232

Iowa is averaging 410/ypg we gave up 137 against them...that's -273

That's an average of giving up 130 yards less per game than those good offenses usually get...that number would be even more if you threw out the game we played against them.

Oh...and as far as the two "cupcake" offenses we've played:

We gave up 179 yards to San Diego State...and 137 yards to Indiana.

Anymore arguments that this defense isn't great???

Now that the offense is starting to come around, it's hard to complain about them...and so some people are frustrated with the defense. Let's just look at this team for what it is right now...

Amazing defense
Offense that is quickly becoming great
A team that isn't turning the ball over
And a team that gets very few penalties

We lost two tough games early...both games against Top 10 teams which were battles until the very end...this team is getting better every week...and we are playing great football. This team is still one of the best teams in college football...and it IS the best 2 loss team in the country. Those putting ND ahead of us are crazy. The Buckeyes are on a roll.

Spin it all you want but Saturday we gave up the second most total yards in school history.

There were reasons. It wasn't a disaster. We won the game.

But this is the D everyone was saying might be the best in school history coming into the season. They did NOT have a good day. Great Defenses don't have great 2nd halves and they don't have off days. They play D from the first snap to the last.

the 1st team defense gave up 24 points, and only 7 in the second half.

From 1971 through 1976 NOBODY socred 24 points against the OSU defense - 2nd team or otherwise.

BTW, after looking at the stats the game ball should go to Houston. Statistically OSU and Minnie were very close in almost every category except one. Minnesota's average net kickoff yardage averaged 19 (thanks in large part to Mr. Ginn). OSUs net kickoff average was a perfect 45.
