Observations from the Barcalounger

On Youboty. Against the run he was a tackling machine. Against the pass he had problems. I wondered why they were always going after Youboty and never really challenged the freshman Jenkins. Then I read that Tressel said they usually put an extra man in the box on Youboty's side and leave him on an island. He never has safety help over the top.

I had never noticed that before. But, apparently someone on Minny's staff had noticed it--maybe someone named Luke Tressel?

Now that Minny has exposed our tendency, others will try to exploit it as well. Unless we change it. Seems like Jenkins has grown up enough to handle his share of island coverage.

i'm no expert but it seemed that ashton was flat footed a lot today. he was letting the receivers get into his body and had no leverage or angle to break on the ball. so i'm saying he timing was off, hopefully he corrects that this week in practice. if he does that against northwestern lookout.

Great breakdown as usual Oh8ch!

I was very happy to see Pittman get that first TD as he deserves it. That second was icing on the cake.

It looks like Ginn has broken through the mental fog that was plaguing him the first half of the season. Very nice catch across the middle on a ball thrown short by TS.

TS seemed to get better as the game went on. His early throws were a bit short, but were good enough that the WRs were able to grab them. He really seemed to be going through the progressions as well.

No turnovers was great and getting one really did Minny in.

I'm hoping Ashton was just kind of out of it today. I wonder if he had his bell rung on one of the early tackles as he seemed to be a bit out of whack, mentally.

Great adjustments in the second half by the defense.

Very nice job on cutting out the penalties, especially the stupid ones.

I was very glad to see that stupid smirk wiped off of Mason's face at the end of the game. For some reason I have just never liked the guy.

The girlfriend is cute, but damn she looks like a high schooler.

The playcalling flat out rocked today. Maybe it's true that Tressel calls a better game from the I. We saw variations on the option, and a few other kinks in the playcalling that were very impressive.

IMHO JT calls a different game when he knows he's going to have to score; or if he thinks that his defense will have a better match-up if he gets a lead. Both were true today.

..............................................................................

On Youboty: Two off weeks in a row. Either he's still hurting, or he's missing practice time in an effort to heal up, or both. Look for him to redeem himself big-time in the last two games of the regular season.

OK, so is it me... Or does Mason look like Luther from the tv show "coach"?

Yes, but Ginn has probably hurt his draft position badly with his performance so far this year. My advice? He should come back for the next two years, just to be sure he gets a good draft position. A good year can make a big difference and your position can make millions of difference. So, I'm advising him to play it safe. I mean, you know, not for us Buckeye fans but in his own interest, of course :wink2: .

troy smith did play a great game, but he needs to step into a couple of his throws. the first play of the game ginn had a 5 yard cushion but the ball was so severly underthrown that the defender was able to knock the ball away. also, the slant ginn caught where he had to dive should have been another TD if the ball had been thrown where it was supposed too. if he can get better accuracy on his throws for the next three weeks, the big ten no longer will look so big, with the exception of us!

Ummm... Thanks to a certain Mr. Clarett, Ginn ain't goin' nowhere after this season, no matter how many TDs he scores.

Credit where its due: Thats the type of play calling and execution I've been waiting for...and on the road even. Like my boss always says, if you can't get here on time get here when you can.:wink2:

Grain of salt: Minny's defense averages giving up 371 total yds and 25 points per game. We notched 451 yds and 38 offensive points.

+ 80 yds is slightly worse vs the average than we did vs IU (+100)
+13 points is a lot better than we did vs IU (+2)

I'm a big fan of increased effeciency in anything.

All in all the O appears to be gelling and confidence is a big key. However, I would just say lets not lose sight of the type of defenses we have played the past 2 weeks or the next 2 we have waiting for us. This is the time to be making hay and they are but how we are doing vs these teams average is what to keep an eye on as far as getting a true indicator of our relative performance.

Personally at this point I don't give a fuck how bad the opposing teams are...wrack up the stats, get the O some confidence and hope it joins them on the plane up to AA. The Game is all that matters now.

I have been whining with the loudest of them, but maybe we already have an OC.

Or did we finally just execute?

hehe.."I love it when a plan comes together"

...Beautiful stuff as always Oh8ch...Where's that "Can Pittman be a great running back" thread? They could have got him 200+ today, easily...I am so impressed with him (don't really care what defense we're talking about), he's breaking tackles and making people miss....That's his job and he's doing great and not getting the recognition for it....His "home run" was a thing of beauty!!

I am a bit confused by many peoples negativity today. I came away from that game thinking that our D had a bad game (flat) and we won going away. I coud not be happier about the direction and momentum of this team.

Couple of thoughts.

Troy has finally sold me. He has earned respect back and continues to improve. Not perfect, but a really nice job today. The first game where at some point I did not think to myself, "wish Zwick was in there".

Pittman is a very very very good back. He obviously works hard and has worked his way into a position to achieve. Good for him.

I am betting Ashton Y was hurt yesterday. He looked too "off" to me.

The D was very flat in the first half and uninspired. They had their worst game of the season and we still won.

I am happier than a puppy with two peters. But, maybe it's just me.

I am really surprised about the complaining about the D. I thought the D played pretty decent in the first half and excellent in the second half.

You guys seem to be forgetting that was the #1 rushing offense in the nation. Mulroney is a stud. But take out that one 50 yd run and we held him and Russell completely in check.

Something has to give when you stop the run. The MINN QB had the game of his life and his WRs made some outstanding catches. We were selling out to stop the run too so that had something to do with it as well.

That was a fun game to watch. The other thing to keep in mind for those worried about MIN gaining 100 more yards than we did, we had so many return yards that it took away some time of possesion as well as offensive yardage. That is never a bad thing. And with the way Huston was kicking off and the fact that we rarely punted and didn't turn the ball over and had few penalties, MIN had to get all the yards themselves, the hard way. To their credit, they did.

It is really nice to watch players develop in front of our eyes. Tough to swallow when the two losses come at the beginning of the season, but I really doubt anyone other than maybe USC would really want to match up against us in a bowl game, Texas included.

Oh, BTW, Vince Young is a superfreak. What a game yesterday!

a couple of somewhat brief thoughts:

first, defensively osu looked bad in the first half. although i'm no expert, it appeared the DL was flowing with the stretch plays too much in the first half, thereby allowing the ol to get to osu's lb's. in the 2nd half you saw more penetration from the DL, and minny didn't run well at all. youboty had a rough day defending the pass, although minny's wr's were the beneficiary of some lucky plays against him.

now for offense:
we saw what so many people were clamoring to see, which is osu to attack on offense. even the commentators picked up on it. osu was spreading the field forcing minny's lb's to play a little wider. what happens, a quick iso to pittman with simms making a nice block, and he's gone. a little later in the game, same formation, minny pinching inside a little more to watch for the run and gonzo hits the seem on a quick slant and he's gone. attack the defense, exploit their adjustments. the key to offensive success. we saw it yesterday.

individuals:
does pittman run hard or what? he probably broke more tackles yesterday than flydell did his entire career. he's averaging about 110 ypg now. the first 1000 yard rusher since mo-mo.

Boone is progressing nicely. it will be hard to sit him when barton returns. datish might as well start repping at LG now to prepare for next year.

youboty and jenkins: tough patches at times, but is there a better set of cb's (everette, youboty, jenkins) against the run in the big ten? that is something that is often overlooked.

troy: to borrow a phrase from lou brown, "starting to come together pepper." what a difference $500 may have made.
