Notre Dame's current TV contract is $X per year.
Notre Dame could expect to get $X + $Y per year in a conference. Let's say Big Ten for geographical reasons. Plus, I think the $Y is the largest if they join the Big Ten, compared to the ACC or anyone else.
What do they make if they make the playoffs? Is it $Y or greater?

If it's greater than $Y, they're gambling that they make the playoffs every year.
If it's less than $Y, they shouldn't care about the playoffs.

There are new rules starting in 2026

ND gets $12.5MM if they make it or not. They get another $6MM if they make it, so max $18.5MM

The Big Ten as a conference, otoh, gets ~29% of CFP revenue or est $377MM split between all 18 schools/~$21MM per school

So ND makes a little less, as far as the CFP goes, by staying independent.

Their TV deal also pays ND less than each Big Ten school makes

Irony of ironies is that their affiliation with the ACC makes up the difference and makes it pretty much break even for them to be independent/ACC adjacent vs joining the B1G.

So the math is a wash and they are all cocksmacks, thus they stay independent.

Have been around the block several times, and so much that my brain gets muddled. Help me understand/remember: How come ND is treated as the second coming. Agree they've got a faithful attendance/tv crowd, but how the bloody hell do they continue to get such preferential treatment? They've got their own TV deal, and the playoff rules are constantly bent to favor ND getting in. They don't have to join a conference, but play in the ACC, although they're not eligible for the league playoff. They (IMHO) were second tier football program for past 15-20 years, but were still treated like rock stars (they were not). Can someone please put me out of my misery, and cogently explain 'how come'? There's gotta be others out there that are questioning this very same thing....PS, when daughter and family toured Northwestern, she heard someone say they were going to ND the next day. She asked if we could as well, pointed out that the next day we were touring tOSU, but if she went there, her grandfather would turn vertical flips in his grave. Thanks in advance.

You haven't taught at a Catholic high school, have you? Also, large parts of NYC, Boston, Philly, and Chicago are full of ND "subway alums." Something like Walmart Michigan fans, but far greater in number. And they all own TV sets.
