Notre Dame (football only discussion)

I blame Ty Willingham.
C'mon man, thats a pretty tasteless remark to make about the situation. I'm all for poking fun at the Ty Willingham situation when it comes the current state of the football program, but this isn't about a game. I feel lucky that I never had to go through a loss like this kid is experiencing.

Good taste has never been my strong point.

Obviously, I feel terrible for the guy, but I'm not one who feels that anonymous internet platitudes are really relevant to anyone. I could express how unfortunate this is and how fortunate I am that I've never been in such a circumstance, but frankly, how I feel about the situation is irrelevant.

I made a joke. Was it in poor taste? Yeah. It was probably a little too soon, as well. But it's not the first insensitive and/or tasteless joke on the internet and I assure you it won't be the last. I apologize if I've offended your sensibilities with my somewhat callous attitude towards someone I've never met, but I'm not going pretend like this really affects me, either.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Notre Dame running back Robert Hughes returned to practice Wednesday, a day after his older brother was fatally shot in his hometown of Chicago.
Police say 24-year-old Earl "Tony" Hughes was shot early Tuesday on Chicago's West Side.
Coach Charlie Weis said Robert Hughes, a freshman, returned to Notre Dame so quickly because he didn't want to fall behind academically and because he thought being back at school would help him.
Hughes was not available for comment.
Weis planned to meet with Hughes' family Thursday.
Notre Dame team members plan to attend the funeral service Friday.
Looks like the team will be in attendance, even a day before a big game (At least for this season) against Navy. Good to see their priorities are in line, being there for a teammate.

Ntre Ame's last non-sellout was Thanksgiving Day, 1973. Their current stadium capacity is 80,795.

ND expects to sell out last two games

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) -- Notre Dame isn't worried it won't sell out its final two home football games, ending a streak of 197 sold-out games, even though Air Force and Duke have returned several hundred tickets.

"I don't think there's any sense the game isn't still going to be sold out, in great part because there's always a lot of traffic on game days," said John Heisler, Notre Dame's senior associate athletic director. "Nobody is concerned about it here."

Truly, Weis is taking their program to places they have not seen in decades.

Breaking new territory with every game.

Want some rich irony? The non-sellout game in question, on November 22nd 1973 was a 48-15 laugher

....... against Air Force.

ND's record that year of the last non-sellout was 11-0-0 - capped with a NC.

I will be surprised if they don't sell out to be honest, not because of the quality of the sport but if you live in South Bend what the hell else is there to do on a Saturday? You can go, tailgate and weep with the rest of the fans, or better yet, talk about next year and how everyone better laugh now because you're going to win the next 60 straight with 4 NC's and 5 Heismans in that period. I say this because the Domer fans at work don't even seem shocked, they are still saying "we knew our recruiting class was bad, so this season is what we expected." So, NoD fans really expected to win 1 game at this point in the season? Hell, I didn't even expect that, I lost a bet to OSU_Buckguy over that, so Irish fans aren't fooling anyone.

Staying home and whacking off on the internet would be more satisfying than anything Charlie Weis produces on the field.

It's Jimmy!

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Jimmy Clausen is back as Notre Dame's starting quarterback.
...
Brian Hardin, director of football media relations, announced the decision after practice Wednesday. Coach Charlie Weis, who usually meets with the media on Wednesdays, was not available for comment. Hardin said Weis would talk about his decision after practice Thursday.
...
Weis indicated after Notre Dame lost to Navy to fall to 1-8 that Sharpley would likely start again against Air Force. But after reviewing game film Sunday, Weis said he was undecided. On Tuesday he said whoever looked better at practice this week would start.

:slappy:

Game 10 and ND still can't decide on a QB. Friggin classic.

Honestly, I don't really have a huge problem with the program. I am one of those people who thinks when they are good, it's better, I like rooting against them, and to be honest, it's really not that much fun this year. I have a long line of family who are tOSU alumni, and then my brother goes and roots for ND? The family is laughing at him, I am laughing at him. I remember living in OH and having to see the ND game on Saturday, then it replayed on Sunday just to remind us, and it felt like it was rammed down our throats.

My brother has no such memories.

Back to the point, when they are good, they are the perfect "bad guy" but they havn't been for a long time. It's gotten to the point where it's pathetic for their fans to have the arrogance they have. People say "they are college footballs version of the yankees/lakers/cowboys" but the difference I see is they have been down for 15 years, those other teams, even though they are professional, have not been. So there's a reason for those fans of the professional team to cheer, when the hell does ND fan actually sit back and go "shit, we need to change some things" instead of "we're independant so we can schedule who we want."

Here's a dose of reality for Notre Dame fans, everyone wants you on their schedule, you know why? You suck and everyone wants a piece of you. Don't feed me that academic standards crap because that's not your problem, your problem is your unrealistic coaching expecations.
I don?t hate the program either, I don?t pay much attention to them, I?d actually prefer they became irrelevant than bounced back. Thinking about it, it probably hurts domers more when people don?t care about them than if we were to hate them, it is representative of how far they?ve fallen. I don?t mind them doing poorly though, I don?t like the thought of them becoming irrelevant because I hate them, but for the hope that it might help other Big Ten schools. I know that Notre Dame takes kids from all over, all national powers do to some degree, but Notre Dame is in Big Ten country and they take a lot of kids from Big Ten states. I like to see Ohio State win the conference, I like to see Ohio State go undefeated, but I like the Big Ten and I don?t like to see Big Ten schools absolutely suck when their state produces talent.

I like Illinois not being a W we chalk up at the beginning of the season, I like the players in Chicago and the state as a whole telling Notre Dame to peddle their shit elsewhere because they have a place to play. I would love for Indiana or Purdue to be far and away the best program in Indiana. I want any territory we share with another major player in college sports to be dominated by the Big Ten, I want Iowa to beat the crap out of Iowa State every time they play, I want Penn State to make Pitt look foolish for scheduling them, I of course want Ohio State to run roughshod over Cincinnati every time we play, and in my opinion it would be great to see Purdue and Indiana own their own state.
