Notre Dame (football only discussion)

Kelly's response in the post-game press conference, when questioned about having a backup frosh QB throw a pick into the end zone when they were on the 19-yard line with 42 seconds left, and had a kicker who'd made 18 straight FG attempts, was quite telling. He said "We're going to call that play again and again. We didn't make it today. But in time we'll make that play."

To me, that looks like arrogance and and unwillingness to admit a coaching error.

For the record, here's Kelly's statement after the game about the tragedy:

i saw the post game presser. He actually used the words "get used to it". Then said something to such as"When we get a one on one coverage we are going to throw the ball."

i really liked kelly as a hire at first and think that he can still turn the program around. however, i think that he is way too arrogant and needs to realize his place. he is a relatively young head coach at the most polarized and scrutinized team in college football. he needs to stop acting like he has joe paterno's credentials and start owning up to his mistakes. he's not joe pa and needs to stop acting like it. show some humility.

Interesting dynamic at play here that RR's replacement should be well aware of;

When a fan base goes full frontal kool aid chugger for an incompetent coach the next guy in gets 1/100th of the slack his predecessor was given.

Hell hath no fury like a sycophant scorned or some such thing.

I was watching the presser and when he said "get used to it," I thought he was telling the fans to get used to ND losing to bad teams. Instead, he went on to clarify that they had better get used to awful coaching decisions. That play call would have made Les Miles proud.

I realize that this comes out some time after the incident last week, but the following rhetorical question (posed by a sports radio figure out here) just sticks in my mind:

Would Brian Kelly have allowed Dayne Crist to go up in that scissor lift to video the practice?

The Sports Radio Guy is a former All-American football player from BYU that went on to play a couple places in the NFL. He has really come out in a restrained anger against this situation. On the flip side, he and his cohort have praised Tressel for his care of the people he's responsible for. Ever since they met Tressel last year for the Rose Bowl, they've been very positive on him and the Buckeyes. But that's for a different thread.

Wonder what the vbet odds would have been that the new Notre Dame coach would turn out to be even more arrogant and more blindly self-confident about the genius of his playcalling than the last Notre Dame coach.

I would have lost my v-ass betting on "unpossible".

Exactly

In terms of what happens on the field, I would have advised giving Kelly the complete benefit of the doubt in his first year. However when theres an off the field incident like this..I don't care if their 9-0, if I'm in charge Kelly gets the axe. This just looks horrible for Notre Dame (or any school). We're talking about an institution that supposedly takes the moral high ground and talks up how it doesn't bend it's admissions for football players (yeah right) and we have a situation where it basically looks like the football coach considered a student to be disposable by caring more about the conditions his team practiced in then everyone's safety.

I'm obviously not saying hes a big enough of an asshole to not give a shit about what happened to the kid but it's clear that he's under pressure to perform at ND and had such tunnel vision that he didn't have perspective for anything else. With the kind of responsibilities that a head coach has you just can't afford not to have that perspective. They've gotta send him packing. They probably ought to send the AD packing on top of that just for his response. Both he and Kelly's responses were a complete joke, they are playing the whole "plausibility deniability" bs and in this situation it just doesn't fly. This isn't some shit where you had guys committing NCAA violations under your nose and so you try to cover your ass, this is a kid's life that was lost because of gross negligence that neither Swarbrick or Kelly are willing to come clean and even APOLOGIZE for. This isn't the time to try to cover your ass legally..your pretty much going to be fucked in that regard. If I'm Notre Dame I'm going to get rid of those 2 clowns then I'm going to come up with the largest $ figure I possibly can to offer this family to save any further embarrassment towards the institution.

In your classic Friday afternoon bad news dump, Notre Dame takes the first step toward doing the right thing in the aftermath of Mr. Sullivan's death:

Notre Dame president: School responsible in student death

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) -- The president of the University of Notre Dame sent an e-mail to students, faculty, staff and alumni Friday saying that the school is responsible for a student videographer's death because it failed to protect him.

"Declan Sullivan was entrusted to our care, and we failed to keep him safe," the Rev. John Jenkins wrote. "We at Notre Dame and ultimately I, as President are responsible. Words cannot express our sorrow to the Sullivan family and to all involved."
