Notre Dame (football only discussion)

WTF? Seriously?

Why Notre Dame has fallen behind in quest for talent - Andy Staples - SI.com

Notre Dame officials made a critical choice a few years ago. They could lower their academic standards to allow in better athletes so alumni could take pride in their football team, or they could keep those standards high so alumni could take pride in their university.
By placing the school's primary mission above athletic success, they chose correctly. Unfortunately, Notre Dame fans must accept the consequences.

It's standard Notre Dame blather. Ignore the fact that they'll tell you about their highly ranked recruiting classes out of one side of their mouth and tell you they can't recruit good kids because the academic standards are too high out the other side.

Looking at the number of bowl berths and the rule that says all 7 win teams must be selected first, Ntre Ame has to hope for some help to even get into a bowl when they get smoked by USC......

Certainly they would be the first 6-6 to be selected (let's not kid ourselves), but last year no 6-6 teams went to a bowl game. Right now there are 62 teams with 6 or more wins not counting Ntre Ame. Navy has already accepted a bid because they have a contract with the San Diego Credit Union whateveritscalled Bowl.

Teams also on the 6 win bubble include:

Virginia, Colorado, Louisville, Auburn, fUCLA, Arizona State, Memphis, Southern Miss, Akron, Bowling Green, Hawaii (who already has 6 wins but can win 7 very easily), and most of the Sun Belt (figuring that 3 of those probably make it to at least 6 wins).

I think if Ntre Ame gets blasted and one of those first 6 get to 6 wins and do it without getting hammered in their final game, Ntre Ame could be dicey in getting a bowl bid.

Nevermind. Virginia shit the bed, Colorado couldn't stop a high school offense and Auburn and fUCLA are so inept offensively I think Ohio State's incoming freshman class would stop them cold.

Ntre Ame is going to get a bowl bid despite how horrific that game was last night. Probably the Texas Bowl where there are no Big XII teams available to fill it and possibly no 7 win teams either.

Here's to the bowl losing streak remaining intact

I've been observing the frequent discussions over at The Huddle about whether this year's improvement was "enough" to warrant bringing CW back for one more year. And you know, stepping back and looking at the big picture, the ONLY significant improvement I see in this year's team is the easier schedule. Or said another way, if last year's squad played this year's schedule, they would probably have gone 6-6. And had this year's squad played last year's schedule, they would probably be 3-9. I simply do not see ANY real improvement.

All I can say is that Ty is one nasty bastard.

With Buffalo's victory over Ball state, I suppose Notre Dame will be playing Buffalo in the Motor City Bowl. So they are either going to get their much desired bowl victory, or they will lose to the MAC champion (ouch). It will be interesting to see the line, it would not surprise me if it's close to even

Remembering that this is the football only thread and that we have the Charlie Weis and other Notre Dame thread for fun and games, I think that Notre Dame will be sorely tested in any bowl. I think that they are that bad.

Tracked a few pages ago, but now that the bowl matchups are out we can do this officially. These are the 89 teams that have won a bowl game since ND's last. If this list is wrong I'll blame OHSportsFan9 for [censored]ing up my list :tongue2:

Air Force, Alabama, Arizona, Arizona State, Arkansas, Auburn, Boise State, Boston College, Bowling Green, BYU, California, Central Michigan, Cincinnati, Clemson, Colorado, Colorado State, Connecticut, East Carolina, Florida, Florida Atlantic, Florida State, Fresno State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Kentucky, Louisville, LSU, Marshall, Maryland, Memphis, Miami, Miami (Ohio), Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Missouri, Navy, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, NC State, North Carolina, Northern Illinois, North Texas, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Oregon State, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Purdue, Rutgers, San Jose State, South Carolina, South Florida, Southern Miss, Stanford, Syracuse, TCU, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Toledo, Troy, Tulane, Tulsa, UCLA, UNLV, USC, Utah, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Washington, Washington State, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming.

If Notre Dame loses, the number will rise to 90 as either Western Michigan or Rice goes on the list five days later. It can go as high as 95 with wins by the following teams:

Northwestern over Missouri
Ball State over Tulsa
Louisiana Tech over Northern Illinois
Buffalo over Connecticut
Vanderbilt over Boston College

Idaho won the humanitarian bowl in '98. I've edited your post, rather than copying it.
