If UC's only loss is a loss to ND(and even if he keeps it close) and UC wins the rest of their games, ridiculous money will be offered regardless. The fork in the road for Fickell is coming sooner rather than later. He's been playing the loyal HC role for a while, and there's going to be a price and a job he can't pass up( I doubt that it's OSU anytime soon). He played UGA close in the NY6 bowl, and was rewarded with a bonus, but his buyout is only in the $3mil range. Fickell makes around $3.5m/yr, and that's still less than Leach at Miss St and Frost at Corn. Not saying that he'd want to go to Starkville, but Nebraska could be a program to watch for him. USC will be an option in the off season, as could LSU(Oregeron is getting paid almost $9mil off of his 1yr perfect storm for an NC, paying Fickell $5-6mil would be a discount for them and an upgrade as well).

From everything that I have read about Luke Fickell, he and his family are extremely happy in Cincinnati; and I don't believe that he is looking for another job.

For him to leave it would have to be for the right school (Ohio State and Notre Dame might be 2 of them) and/or an ungodly huge amount of money that he couldn't refuse. With that being said, he's only 48 and his best coaching years are (probably) still in the future.

Luke Fickell didn’t downplay anything about this week’s game between his No. 7 Cincinnati Bearcats (3-0) and the No. 9 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (4-0).

He did anything but that.

“This is what you’ve always dreamed of,” Fickell said. “This is what you want. This is what these guys have worked for. Not just to play Notre Dame because that’s always a big deal. But to have the matchup where you’re legitimately two top-10 teams that a lot of people are excited about watching.”

Fickell was asked if this week’s game is the biggest regular-season matchup he has coached in since he arrived at Cincinnati five years ago. He said yes, and that list includes a trip to Ohio State to take on the No. 5 Buckeyes two years ago.

Fickell was an assistant and interim head coach (2011) for the Buckeyes from 2002-16. He graduated from Ohio State and started his coaching career there as a graduate assistant in 1999. Even with all those ties to the OSU program, Fickell still said this game against Notre Dame is a bigger one for his Bearcats.

The difference is where Cincinnati is now as a program compared to where it was then. The Buckeyes blew out the Bearcats 42-0. This time around, Cincinnati is a two-point favorite (per BetMGM) over the Irish at Notre Dame Stadium — a venue where head coach Brian Kelly’s team has won 26 times in a row.

Yeah, that all sounds great in an interview during the season. But money has a funny way of changing coaches and family's minds. I don't believe a word from ANY HC on where their status may lie in the future. If a school came out and were to throw an extra $1-2mil/yr plus more incentives at Fickell, or even double what he currently makes, we'll see how "loyal" he is. To paraphrase the great Chris Rock: "Coaches are only as loyal as their options". We can continue this discussion on the UC thread, as I don't want to derail the ND one further.

I could be wrong, but I seem to remember an interview where he spoke at length about how important it was to him and his wife that their children go to catholic school. I really don't see him leaving UC until his children are out of school - unless either the OSU or ND jobs open up.

All I'm saying is that we're all adults and understand opportunities in life. There are Catholic schools in every state. And all those kids can't be cheap. Money has a way talking loud and making past interviews irrelevant. UC could have 1-2 losing seasons and those opportunities are no longer there...
But hey, anything is possible. Maybe he stays and turns UC them into a national power and has them running the Big 12 for years.

Playing tough schedules year after year would sharpen them up. I believe the Irish would replace Bama as the best team in the league. And we played well against Georgia twice.
Marcus Freeman is recruiting GREAT now but would do even better playing in the SEC.
It would be alot of fun playing at Death Valley on Saturday night and crushing BK's dream.. It would be neat to avenge our lone loss to Ole Miss in our 77 championship season. Lots more excitement in the SEC.

Lots to dissect here.
First, I guess Notre Dame has been "dull" recently because their schedules don't keep them sharp. Ha. Lame. Zero points.
Second, Notre Dame is going to replace Bama as the best team in the league. Nice. No evidence to argue that, so sure, try to get that point. You didn't get it.
Third, "played well against Georgia twice". Meh. I don't remember Notre Dame playing Georgia, so I won't score this comment.
Fourth, would recruit even better playing in the SEC. Yeah, maybe. But where's your back-up evidence? 0 points but I'll leave it open until you support this argument.
Fifth, yeah, it probably would be fun playing at LSU on a Saturday night. So? 0 points until I get what your point is.
Sixth, Avenge your lone loss in 1977??? HA! That was 45 years ago. The players in that game are dead, or maybe just really old. The players today have parents younger than that. You've lost your chance at revenge. 0 points.
Lots more excitement in the SEC. Debatable, but I'll give you that 1 point. You'll lose a lot more. Everyone would. Put Bama in a nerf league and they'll lose less than they did in the SEC. But Notre Dame in the SEC and they'll lose more. But yeah, better talent might mean more excitement. 1 point.
