The last couple years the schedules have been a lot easier than they had been...and the team struggled mightily despite that. Kelly may seal his defeat with the schedules coming up in the next couple years. Next year isn't going to be a cake walk either, I see Wake Forest and Purdue as the only gimmes maybe, and they were the only two teams that didn't go bowling aside from USC of course:
USF
Michigan
Michigan State
Pittsburgh
Purdue
Air Force
USC
Navy
Wake Forest
Maryland
Boston College
Stanford
Boston College should be a gimme, but they're a rival and we often play them shitty. I'd like to say Navy should be a gimme, but not anymore. They're a decent team now and we haven't prepared well for them the last 4 years. The defense played a little better at the end of the year than they did against Navy, but that was a pretty piss poor performance. Air Force had a pretty decent team last year too, 4 losses that came to 3 opponents in the Top 10 at the time and San Diego State, beating GT in their bowl.
I wasn't talking about SOS directly, I was talking about the made-for-TV national matchups that ND supposedly wants the ability to schedule throughout the country. Temple is a throwaway game and pretty much the opposite of what they supposedly want to take advantage of as an independent. It's a game that offers no national interest. It's a series firmly within Notre Dame's eastern footprint - a glorified gathering for the Subway Alumni Association, Philadelphia Chapter. There's nothing wrong with that if that's what they really want - it's really no different than what everybody else tries to do - but they don't need to talk out of both sides of their mouth about it. As you point out, they're going for those interesting non-regional matchups to some extent with some of their future schedules - but not to an extent greater than they'd be able to should they join a conference.
