So ND knew about this alleged hoax that was pulled on Te'o, but no one thought to tell someone in the media that maybe it wouldn't be a good idea to mention the dead girlfriend during the bowl game? The 3 week silence tells me they were just hoping to make it all disappear and ride the emotional story of their headline player and not be revealed for the assholes we all know they are.

It's not just that. The statement is saying there is a girl who duped him. From the deadspin article, there was never any girl. Teo made multiple statements on how they met, talked all the time, etc. His parents even talked about meeting her and how they thought she would be their daughter in law. Now the university is admitting they are in on the lie and trying to spin it or they are incredibly stupid without checking any facts. This is getting worse and worse for Teo, his family, and ND.

Looks like it's coming down to 2 possibilities.

1) Teo was in on it the whole time and so was his family.
2) Teo was initially duped, but just ran with it and continued to make up stories either to further his publicity or not look like an idiot.

Not many good options for Manti at this point.

The first thing that came to mind when reading that Deadspin article was that T'eo is gay, he's in a relationship with this Tuiasosopo guy, and the fake girl was how they covered their tracks.

Far-fetched? Sure. Possible? Possibly.
