Northwestern Wildcats (Official Thread)

TBH, I’d be surprised if Pat is let go. He may get a longer suspension, but I’d be a monkey’s uncle if he’s let go. The NWU folks in my circle are all somewhere between, “If he didn’t know, the suspension is probably warranted, but that’s it…” and “Who cares, it’s Pat. Kid’s being kids…”
Well, I guess I stand corrected. LOL.

Still amazed this blew up. It almost feels like they wanted him gone and were looking for cause.

I will say - outright firing Fitzgerald after a commissioned investigation recommended a two-week suspension probably violated his contract termination clauses at some level.

Fitz is going to get the rest of the money owed to him I'd bet.

For the record, Dan Webb isn't going to lose to anyone NU can find to defend themselves. No one. In fact, Fitz may own the University after he gets done with them.

And the Covid year success was enough for the nerds to brag about for another few decades.

This is a lose/lose job for a HC, but should be treated like a stepping stone at this point. They're in the same position as Vanderbilt, nerd schools in very strong athletic conferences, with fans that don't care about sports for the most part. This job is not for the faint of heart, because a young, up and coming coach could see his career stall. And an old coach could destroy any legacy he made.

Fundamental difference is that Northwestern has invested and continues to invest hundreds of millions in facilities. From that best in the conference indoor facility to a new stadium. Vanderbilt doesn't spend jack on football and their stadium is a complete dump with no plans to replace or renovate.

Someone can do well there. It just depends on how deeply below regular freshman standards the coach is allowed to recruit. There's always been some level that they could go down to. How low is the only question.

You can't recruit to a place where 75% of the home crowd is rooting for the visitors.

Plus it's a vacation destination. Maybe a little bit less so at NWU, especially when the weather turns chilly. Opposing SEC fans go to Nashville to shop, eat great food, party on Broadway and oh by the way, a football game breaks out for a couple hours on Saturday.
