No. 1 Ohio State vs. #9 Xavier (Game Thread)

On the officiating, on two other boards I read, non-team specific, there are a great number of posts about how Oden's fifth foul should have been intentional/flagrant/lock the guy up in jail. I haven't seen a good replay of it yet, so I can't really comment on it, but the whining from non-OSU fans is a lot worse than I see here.
i've seen the replay from my own vcr, and i saw the replay that cbs showed with kellogg and davis in the studio. both analysts were spot on. kellogg stated that it was definitely a hard foul that could have been called intentional. it wasn't definitive, though. he also stated that it would have been the wrong call (intentional), considering the situation. he argued for the spirit--not the letter--of the law.

davis was also especially appropriate. he stated that there is no rule that doesn't permit a hard foul. players are permitted to commit hard fouls with the intent of stopping play. just because oden knocked cage on his butt, it doesn't necessarily mean that the foul was to be called intentional... even though it was intentional.

it appeared to me that oden contacted the xavier player with his chest first and his arms extended. calling this foul intentional, in my opinion, punishes oden for being big just like not calling a foul on oden's defender because oden is large.

Very lucid observation. I frame by framed it and Oden was recovering from No. 1 yanking his arm almost to the court, he chested the guy and the arm thing was almost like he was trying to catch him when he flew out of bounds. It was a hard foul, but when a 7 footer is going one way,and a 6 footer the other, someone's going to go down, hard. No worse than Butler getting hatched at midcourt with no call...

i'm happy that it wasn't levender whom oden fouled. it then would have very likely been called an intentional.

edit: damn, that second sentence is ugly. i'm not changing it, though. :p

while true, i hope that's the last reason that entered the official's mind when calling the foul on oden.
I dont think that thought ever entered the ref's mind. Why call a foul just because a player got knocked down. They didnt call the one where Butler got cross body blocked either .

It appeared to me that Oden took a step forward to get the ball, and the Xavier guy took a step towards Oden at the same time, causing him (Xavier) to fall back/down. Oden's arms extending (why they are saying it was a push) looked, at least to me, like an attempt to grab the ball. Just my .02.
