NIU RB Garrett Wolfe (official thread)

The things these schools do to get on TV... There is NOBODY in the stands at this game - because they're playing it on a Sunday night. If you had just an audio feed of the game action and the crowd - no announcers - you'd swear it's a D-II high school game.

I am watching the NIU Miami game. I'm here to tell you, that little f*cker has some power for as small as he is!
Did you see that block?

It wasn't Wolfe's best night, but he did what he had to, and we made plays as a team when we needed them.

Since the 0-2 start, we've won 4 in a row. HUGE game coming up next week @ Western Michigan to cnclude the 3 game road swing.

Good game, but not exactly a Heisman performance in his last show on national TV. Miami is 0-6 now
It's not his last show on national T.V.

The Iowa game will be on ESPN from what I have heard.
The Toledo game is on ESPN2.
The MAC Championship game is on ESPN (hopefully we get to it).

I agree it wasn't a Hesiman preformance though.

There will be 4 guys in New York for the Heisman Ceremony. I think Troy, Quinn and AP are likely givens... and that leaves one darkhorse. Early it looked like Chris Leak may have a shot, but he won't be there. Garrett could leasily slip into the spot if he keeps up this eye-popping year!!

NIU holds off Miami upset bid
Huskies' Wolfe gains 162 yards on 29 carries NORTHERN ILLINOIS 28, MIAMI OF OHIO 25

October 9, 2006
BY JIM O'DONNELL Staff Reporter
OXFORD, Ohio -- The harvest moon over Miami of Ohio became a hunter's moon Sunday night. And the hunted became Garrett Wolfe and the Northern Illinois Huskies. In front of a grand Sunday night audience on ESPN, Wolfe and Co. struggled against the winless RedHawks before pulling out a 28-25 victory.
Wolfe finished with 162 hard-fought yards on 29 carries in a national showcase for his Heisman Trophy campaign.
The Huskies didn't take the lead for good until Phil Horvath found Brandon Davis for a short touchdown pass with 7:46 to play. Wolfe then bulldozed in for a two-point conversion that made it 28-25.
NIU stopped the RedHawks on downs on their final two possessions and Horvath iced it with 1:10 to play, sneaking for a first down on fourth-and-one.
The game was the second of an important three-game Mid-American Conference road segment for NIU (4-2, 3-1) that will conclude Saturday at Western Michigan (3-2, 1-1). The Huskies picked up a major assist in the MAC West race from Ohio on Saturday when the Bobcats beat Western Michigan 27-20. That leaves only Central Michigan (3-3, 3-0) ahead of NIU in the division. The Huskies host Central Michigan on Nov. 17.
The Sunday night kickoff was the first in NIU history, and the trip also marked a sentimental journey for Huskies coach Joe Novak. He was a defensive stalwart for Bo Schembechler at Miami from 1964 to '67 before beginning his coaching career in northeastern Ohio. He also met wife Carol on the Oxford campus. Novak is now 2-1 in trips back to his alma mater as NIU head coach.
But most eyes were on Wolfe, especially considering Miami entered the game 104th of 119 Division I-A teams against the run, surrendering 182.2 yards per game.
That futility was hardly in evidence during a first quarter in which Miami limited Wolfe to 23 yards on seven carries. Only his opening quarter at Ohio State (six carries for 13 yards) and his second quarter against Ohio (six for 16) were lower.
The RedHawks caught an early break when Horvath threw his third interception of the season to end the first NIU drive at midfield. Miami had to settle for a 37-yard field goal by Trevor Cook.
The pendulum shifted back to NIU later in the quarter when an Andy Dittbenner punt bounced off Miami's Wendell Brunson, and Greg Turner recovered at the Miami 22. Two plays later, Wolfe blazed in from 16 yards out for a 7-3 lead.
Chris Nendick added a 36-yard field goal to make it 10-7. But Miami quarterback Mike Kokal exploited an injury-riddled NIU secondary to connect with redshirt freshman Dustin Woods for a spectacular 80-yard touchdown.
The RedHawks' extra point was compromised by a bobbled snap, and the NIU lead held at 10-9.
After linebacker Cory Hanson came up with NIU's first interception of the season, Wolfe rolled 55 yards to the Miami 3, then closed the drive with a three-yard TD scamper.
A superb goal-line stand by the Huskies forced Miami to settle for a 31-yard Cook field goal and a 17-12 halftime deficit.

I think the weakness of schedule will hurt him. A lot will depend on how he does against Iowa and if he breaks Sanders record. He may go to NY but not win

Wolfe's Heisman chances died because of Horvath and out coaching staff.

Horvath sucks, and the staff refuse to take him out. Therefor they stacked the box the enitre game.

OK, but come on, let's be realistic. Wolfe was NIU's only weapon. He is the real deal but eventually somebody had to stack the box for an entire game. I think you can expect more of the same for the rest of the season.

We have another weapon at WR, but we have no QB.
