Wright's return gives Flyers a lift

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

As excited as Brian Gregory was, the Dayton basketball coach couldn't quite wipe the pangs of "what if" from his mind.
Freshman forward Chris Wright returned Monday night in the Flyers' 55-48 NIT victory at Illinois State after missing 2 ? months because of a fractured right ankle.
In 10 minutes, the 6-foot-8 forward had nine points, three rebounds and two blocks. On one play, he swooped in from the top of the key to snare an offensive rebound and score between two Illinois State players.
It was the kind of rare athleticism that helped Dayton to a 14-1 start this season. But after Wright suffered his injury, the Flyers went .500 the rest of the season, costing them a bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The lineups

A look at who started the last time Dayton and Ohio State played each other in basketball, during the 1988-89 season:
Ohio State starting five: Jay Burson, G; Jamaal Brown, G; Perry Carter, C; Jerry Francis, F; Tony White, F
Coaches: Gary Williams, Randy Ayers, Fran Fraschilla, Paul Brazeau
Dayton starting five: Negele Knight, G; Ray Springer, G; Bill Uhl, C; Steve Pittman, F; Anthony Corbitt, F
Coach:: Don Donoher

In its way, a college basketball program is as alive as the athletes and coaches who carry it forward. It faces triumphs and failures. Family fights and forgiveness.
In that regard, Ohio State and Dayton are like fraternal twins traveling similar, if not identical, paths through the past 20 seasons. They are separated by about 75 miles of flat land but connected by the ups and downs of shared experiences.

NIT
Buckeyes don't want to see end come yet

Wednesday, March 26, 2008 3:22 AM
By Bob Baptist

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The vision of sand draining through the hourglass was planted in the minds of Jamar Butler, Othello Hunter and Matt Terwilliger months ago by coach Thad Matta.
The sand was their careers as Ohio State basketball players, growing shorter by the day as January turned to February, then February turned to March of their senior year. Matta wanted them to get the most out of every day.
Hunter did not want to think about it.
"Because I'm going to have to move on to the real world pretty soon," he said. "So I'm like, 'Don't think about it. If it comes, it comes, but hopefully it doesn't come too soon.' "

It's only an NIT game, but a lot riding on Dayton-Ohio State showdown

COLUMBUS (AP) - Rare is the game that actually involves multiple subplots this late in a season, particularly when the teams involved are just 10 days removed from having to settle for berths in the NIT. When Dayton (23-10) comes to Ohio State (21-13) on Wednesday night in a quarterfinal matchup, the winner gets an all-expenses paid trip to the Big Apple to play on the hallowed hardwood at Madison Square Garden. That in itself ups the ante.

Flyers-Bucks a battle for Ohio
But teams think NIT showdown could have been NCAA-worthy, too
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

COLUMBUS - For the first time since 1988, Dayton and Ohio State will meet on the basketball court.
But the game is in the quarterfinals in the NIT, not the tournament the Flyers (23-10) and Buckeyes (21-13) had been hoping for.
Matt Terwilliger, an Ohio State senior who grew up 18 miles from Dayton in Troy, recognizes the game takes on a different stature because of both teams' rabid fans.
"I know from people around here it's going to be pretty serious because we haven't played since, what, the '80s?," he said.
OSU coach Thad Matta prefers to play down the in-state rivalry.
"At this stage, we (both teams) have played so many games, it's more along the lines of the winner moves on and the team that doesn't win, their season is over," he said.

OHIO STATE MEN'S BASKETBALL
Buckeyes finally peaking

Wednesday, March 26, 2008 Doug Lesmerises

Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus -- Tonight's NIT quarterfinal, with a trip to the semifinals in New York on the line, should see Ohio State and Dayton at least close to their best.
The Buckeyes (21-13) readily acknowledge this is the most consistently high level of play they've exhibited all year after two easy NIT wins over North Carolina Asheville and California. In their 55-48 victory over Illinois State on Monday, the Flyers (23-10) got back 6-8 freshman star Chris Wright, who had been out since breaking a bone in his ankle Jan. 9. Dayton was 13-1 when Wright, its leading rebounder and second-leading scorer, got hurt, then went 4-8 in its next 12 games to fall out of the NCAA Tournament picture.
He scored nine points in just 10 minutes of action in what could be just a mini-preview of what the Buckeyes will get.

UD-OSU haven't faced off in 20 years

Teams split four games in 1980s; former Flyers star Goodwin says UD's Ohioans must be calm.

By Doug Harris
Staff Writer

Wednesday, March 26, 2008

DAYTON ? Norm Grevey is one of the most prolific 3-point shooters in University of Dayton basketball history, but his personal highlight against Ohio State came at the defensive end.
Although hobbled throughout his career by a knee injury, Grevey had a steal and took a charge during a five-minute stint in an 81-80 road victory over the Buckeyes in 1987.
"It's something I had never done before and probably never did again," he cracked.
The Hamilton native relished a shot at the home-state Buckeyes, as did every other native Ohioan on the roster.

UD NOTES
Gregory can't get help from Izzo in scouting OSU

By Doug Harris
Staff Writer

Wednesday, March 26, 2008

DAYTON ? Although they have a close relationship, Brian Gregory hasn't turned to Michigan State coach Tom Izzo for a scouting report on Ohio State.
The fifth-year Dayton coach said conferences don't allow teams to share information about other league members. And besides, Izzo's busy.
"Right now, coach Izzo has Memphis on Friday (in the NCAA tournament)," Gregory said. "Coach Izzo loves me, but I understand he's got a lot of other things on his mind."
Gregory, a longtime Spartans assistant, did manage to reach Izzo by phone this week, but only to needle him about two relatively snug NCAA tourney victories over Temple and Pittsburgh.

OHIO STATE NOTES
Matta says Buckeyes didn't recruit Wright

By Mark Gokavi
Staff Writer

Wednesday, March 26, 2008

COLUMBUS ? Thad Matta knows who Chris Wright is but doesn't really consider him a recruit that got away.
"He's a great athlete, scores in a lot of different ways," the Ohio State men's basketball coach said Tuesday, March 25. "He drives the ball and finishes around the basket."
But the University of Dayton's prized freshman apparently didn't get a lot of consideration from the Buckeyes.
"I knew who he was," Matta said. "But we really didn't recruit him."
The Buckeyes will see Wright ? just back from injury ? and the Flyers at 9 p.m. today in an NIT quarterfinal game at the Schottenstein Center.

Things are getting a little testy over at UDPride.

UDPRIDE - The Reality of Tonight's Game

I agree with a lot of what Brutus said....not all. There is definitely some interesting discussions. Most UD fans are fans of OSU football and even follow OSU basketball to a certain extent. A lot bailed on OSU after the Matta hire though. I'm sure there are a lot of mixed emotions about this game accross southern Ohio.
