Nick Saban (ex-HC Alabama Crimson Tide)

Yes, I'm sure it depends on many factors, but this being a different kicker, I can only assume he thought he had the range. If I had a kid I thought could make it, that's what I'd do. Obviously Saban wanted to win so he did what he thought would do that. He was wrong. I'd have been wrong too.

Like I said -- same kid that missed a 30yd FG.
If he didn't make it from 30 in a throwaway game, what makes you think he's going to make it from 57 in crunch time? If he had any degree of consistency, the RS Frosh would've been starting over the guy that had already missed 3.
IIRC Aaron Pettrey was only ~50% from 50+ and he was clutch. Kicking from 57 had approximately 0% chance.

If he had a Griese Brees at his his back it may have been possible.

And the real blunder wasn't the last decision. Saban fucked up by going for it on 4th down rather than take the chip shot field goal with about 5 to go. Would have gone up two scores. So... he doesn't have a kicker he trusts to kick it 30 yards, but he does have one he will let try something double that?

I can't blame him for going for it on 4th after missing 3 field goals. But it does leave you wondering when, with 1s left, he goes for an impossible 57 yarder. I was laughing before it was ever kicked, sure that it was headed to overtime when he could've gone for the "short" hail mary.

But his real failure as a coach ... with all the oversigning he engages in... he can't find one single half-decent kicker. That's the indictment to me, and indicative of his arrogance imo.
If Alabama has somebody that can make a FG, they win that game by 2 scores. Instead of petitioning the officials for an extra "oh shit" second, McCarron would've been in Victory Formation.

He doesn't even look. Aren't all his kickers walk-ons?

While I don't doubt your perspective about his time at LSU, both kickers reported as on scholarship (Foster from class of 2010 and Griffith class of 2012). Perhaps he needs to recruit better?

Weren't there supposedly a number of OSU fan/imbeciles who sent very harsh and in some cases threatening e-mails to Ryan Hamby after the '05 Texas game?

Yes. Every fan base has that small percentage that is idiotic and makes the whole look bad. However, I tend to believe that the percentage of lunatics in the Bama fan base in higher than the percentage in the OSU fan base.
