NFL won't let church show game

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- The NFL has nixed a church's plans to use a wall projector to show the Colts-Bears Super Bowl game, saying it would violate copyright laws.

NFL officials spotted a promotion of Fall Creek Baptist Church's "Super Bowl Bash" on the church Web site last week and overnighted a letter to the pastor demanding the party be canceled, the church said....
Seems like the No Fun League is getting a bit full of itself. Thoughts?

******

Also, for what it's worth, here are the official NFL Party Rules, as documented in the indystar's original story

NFL PARTY RULES
For groups that want to host Super Bowl parties -- other than sports bars and businesses that normally show televised sports -- here are rules the NFL says must be followed:

• No admission fees (even to pay for snacks).
• Only one television (55 inches or smaller).
• No use of the words "Super Bowl" in promotional materials.
• No exhibition of the game in connection with events "that promote a message."

From the church's website...

We regret to inform you that we have had to cancel our bash to view the Colts game this Sunday in a family friendly environment due to the fact that the NFL believes we would be in violation of the Copyright Act, because we had planned to show the game on a screen bigger than a 55 inch diagonal. We have appealed to their legal counsel and exhausted all options without success. We have been informed that the only exceptions to view the game are given to sports bars and restaurants. While we have argued that we only intend to provide a family oriented environment that will make no profit from the showing, the NFL claims that our event cannot proceed by law. Therefore, we have no choice but to challenge this in court or cancel the event. We choose to cancel the event. We deeply regret that we have been prohibited by the NFL from providing a family friendly environment for celebrating the Colts great season.

It's not really a new trend with the NFL. Moving MNF games to ESPN, restricting some games to the NFL Network, these sorts of BS rules...

I don't know how much I like these moves. They know they have a hot product, and they're milking us consumers for all we're worth.

Nah, that's just diversifying and "good business". I don't feel like I'm being "milked" yet (compare that to health insurance ... now those bastards will milk you for all you're worth)

"The only exceptions given to sports bars and restaurants" makes me believe that the NFL would have more difficulty arguing against banning broadcasts in those venues because of their precedent of past broadcast of previous NFL games. Newcomers (churches) advertising public viewing of SB 41, are more easily squelched, (no precedent).
I believe the "ruling" against newbies will actually set a tough legal standard. If/When NFL begins to set restrictions or sell licenses to sports bars and public restaurants where profits are made during public showing, they will argue with the weight of this successful and unchallenged legal decision against churches and nonprofits.
Please don't be too happy about this new restriction on nonprofit broadcast.

And just how are they?

It's thier product. They have rules. They choose where and when to enforce them. From the rules posted in the first post, the church was violating three.

I'm not saying I agree with the NFL here. But, OTOH, I'm just a little upset at the church for whining about it. WWJD? I doubt he'd whine.

How long before NFL Security starts raiding SuperBowl parties?
I can't find the link, but there is the episode of Family Guy where Peter is recording MNF and the Feds bust in and ask him if he has the expressed written consent of ABC and Monday Night Football. He only holds up the one from ABC and they proceed to shoot the shit out his VCR.

EDIT: I just realized how not funny that is typed out, and apologize for all those who had to read that. :(

Maybe this is a good thing, since these decent, church going fans won't have to be out on the road after the game with those who chose to take advantage of the "Super Bowl drink specials" at the local Sports Bar from 12:00pm-11:00pm on game day. :shake:
