NFL Discussion (Official Thread)

Mahomes throws the ball really well, for an "H Back"
I've got time, let's do this. I found this 18 min clip of highlights from last nights game. I'll jot down the number of impressive throws I see, and the number of HBack plays I see. (I'm 3:12 in already....one of each so far. I'll update when I'm done.)

Impressive throws: 5
HBack plays: 5

Notes:
- He just turned a reverse flea flicker into an HBack play
- I'm realizing I'm being VERY LENIENT with the word "impressive". I gave him credit for the throw to Kelce where he lands on his head.
- I should give bonus HBack points for how cocky he got on that option run for a TD. What a clown.
- Not going to categorize it either way, but the pass to Kelce that shouldn't have counted and was never reviewed was borderline HBack that turned into a shit throw that got bailed out by patented KC reffing.

So, yeah.....not really seeing anything to change my mind. A whole bunch of screens, RPO, and passes to wide ass open players. Some actual NFL throws in there....none of which resulted in points, btw. Maybe they saved all these plays where he threw it "really well" for not highlights?

Did you do this watching the all-22?

Straight off the linked clip

Ok.

Well, then, no - we aren't going to do this because we can't do this. As plainly and politely as I can say it.

Evaluating QB play without the most important tool is a fools errand. And we won't be operating on a mutual level of information or understanding.

It would be like someone in medicine trying to give a concrete diagnosis without an MRI, Xray, blood panels, specimens, etc etc.

It's a disservice at worst, educated wishes tossed in the dark at best.

I have access to it, which we can go over at another time when either of us aren't busy. Always happy to talk shop.

But what concerns me is this - your benchmark for what constitutes good QB'ing seems to be off "impressive plays" almost exclusively. That's incredibly subjective. It also completely ignores something often overlooked that binds QB play game to game, season to season- making the consistent throws when present. The routine, methodical type stuff that Mahomes has been really executing well these last couple years as the offense around him has regressed.

You're a good poster with a long history here. But this a strange hill to die on that I just can't wrap my head around.

What's funny is that I know we both agree about Mahomes being a whiny bitch along with being sick of the favorable calls and media exposure. But that doesn't mean we have to fail in acknowledging the eye and arm talent.

These aren't 22, but it's Tim Tebow I'd encourage you to watch and re-evalute your position (I doubt you will. I have a feeling I could get a notarized letter from 31 NFL GMs saying they would take Mahomes as their QB and we wouldn't agree)

I can't find anything decent on Taysom Hill. But when you talk about utility, H back types - he wasn't even consistent enough to be a starting QB for the QB needy Saints.

I'm not sure when, but if we'd want to set up a BP community, all-22 viewing party, I'd be all for that as well.

Video unavailable, but when you say "we aren't going to do this", um, I already did. You can't say he threw the ball really well, and not have those show up on the highlight reel. He threw 5 good passes from the highlights....and I was being very favorable. Everything else was easy manufactured shit that KC could have half the QBs in the league also be as successful with. Hell, Justin Fields would shine in this offense, because about 80% of the time he wouldn't have to make a read. It's just hike throw repeat. It'd be pretty hard to take 9 sacks when you don't even have the ball in your hands long enough for the defense to know it's been snapped.

Agreed he's a whiny bitch.
Agreed with the bullshit calls.
Agreed with the incessant media coverage.
Agreed that he's a good QB.

Disagree that he's actively being a good QB. He's been JT Barrett for a few years now.

Justin can't even currently complete 70% of his passes when he gets an open primary now.

Agreed that he's a good QB.

Say this part again, but slower.

JT wasn't even good enough to be a 51% passer in the preseason and struggled throughout his training camp stops.

I get what you're saying- you believe Mahomes is a good, not great QB. My argument against that is that even in his worst season, 2024, the dude was still

-7th in total yards
- 7th in success percentage (efficiency metric)
- 4th in passing 1st downs
- 9th in YPG
- 8th in QBR

Despite playing in an offense that was 19th in explosive passing plays, 21st in OL blocking win rates and both starting RBs not able to average even 4ypc. The only upside to the KC running game was that Kareem was actually 6th in rushing success rate on 1st down, but split time in the backfield.

So no explosive weapons, a massive increase in 21 personnel, a so-so running game, a slightly below average OL and the 2nd fewest season carries attempts in his career. Yet still led the NFL in sustained drives, top 10 in most efficiency metrics and produced above average results including an AFC title.

That's pretty ridiculous efficiency and play for any QB, no?

I'm not comparing him straight up to JT. He's in the pros what JT was in college.

7th in yards, 4th in passing 1st downs, blah blah blah. Look at those passes. He takes the snap and immediately throws it. I could do that. They're manufactured yards. He's not the reason those yards pile up.

I'm not saying he's good, not great. I'm saying he's good, but people think he's football Jesus and we don't actually know because that scheme would make anybody look good. I promise you Justin Fields would look like a much better player if 80% of the time all he had to do was IMMEDIATELY throw to one "read". That's not even a read, it's an extended handoff.
