Next Generation Console News: Xbox One, PS4, Wii U

Amazon in Germany put a date and price on the Wii U. 399.99 Euros and December 21st. In other words it's a $500 console. Of course Europe prices are not always the same as the US. It's not uncommon for things to be cheaper and release earlier in the US. Yet even if it's $400 that is crazy expensive for a console with low to mid range hardware that will be well behind the competition in a year.

I expect Microsoft and Sony will actually launch at a much more reasonable price point with their next consoles. Their last gen consoles launched at $400-$500, but back then they had top of the line hardware. I actually think this time around they are going to go with more reasonable hardware and launch in the $300 range. That will absolutely destroy the Wii U sales. Of course this is not the first time Nintendo completely missed the price point for their hardware (see the Nintendo 3ds).

Way early pre-order prices are often grossly inflated so that the retailer can just refund the difference once the stock arrives. Amazon has listed first party games at $99 before.

According to Best Buy sources their pre-order price is $299, because their pre-order place holder page is up and while it doesn't display the price, it does show you will earn 598 rewards points on the purchase, and those are 2/$1 spent.

... according to Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli, who revealed in a CVG interview that a "respected developer" is working on a CryEngine 3 title for the Nintendo platform.

"My opinion of the Wii U is very high," he said. "It's just that we didn't have a business case unfortunately that justifies us making a game for it.

"It doesn't mean that CryEngine 3 doesn't run on Wii U - it actually runs beautifully. In fact, there actually is a game in development from a respected developer that we will be announcing. I've seen the game running and it looks really great."

Yerli estimated that the Wii U hardware is "minimum on par with the current generation."

"From my perspective I do not understand the public's concerns that the Wii U is weaker than PS3 and 360," he said. "That I cannot see. From my perspective the Wii U is minimum as powerful as Xbox 360."

In the same interview the Crytek boss claimed his studio's technology is already "way beyond" next-gen console specifications.

and the current consoles are 6 years old. They went with a 4000 series GPU (which is 3 generations ago), and IIRC it's not even a high end one. Will it play high def games? Yes. Will it stand the test of time. Not likely.

Even though it will be a little more powerful than current consoles, the games from 3rd party developers will not use the power. They will be ports. Nintendo probably won't even max out the graphics capability since their games are not graphics intensive. So in the one year they will have a graphical advantage, you won't actually see any better graphics.

As for price, if it is $300 then that is better. Yet still expensive for something that will be way behind in 1 year. I love Nintendo as a game developer, but their consoles have been highly lacking for a long time. They try to innovate, but I just don't see a major demand for the Wii U controller like the Wii motion controllers when the Wii launched. Then after a year they will probably run into the same issue they have now, their hardware will be considered obsolete and developers of AAA titles won't want to bother creating a version of their game for the Wii U.

There is already an open platform that reaches over 1 billion people worldwide. It's called the PC.

Can they do it for $100, well, that is a major question. They are going to need some seriously cheap hardware, and obviously they are not engineering it themselves. Even the cheapest of mobile phones cost around that to make.

Call me skeptical, yet hey, good for them.
