Workers dig furiously to rid new Yanks stadium of Red Sox jersey

Constructions workers dug through the concrete at the new Yankee stadium to find a jersey of Boston's David Ortiz.

Crisis, and curse, averted.
It took about five hours, but the Red Sox jersey that was embedded in the concrete of the Yankees' new stadium to place a curse on the New York franchise has been unearthed with jackhammers.
Earlier this week, a construction worker who is a Boston fan working on the concrete crew at the $1.3 billion new Yankee Stadium buried a Red Sox shirt in with the concrete foundation, in the hopes of jinxing the New York Yankees' new home, the New York Post reported.
The newspaper reported Sunday that two workers approached a construction manager with what they thought was the location of the jersey. After digging a two-foot by three-foot hole, the jersey was found.
"They absolutely pinpointed that if it was in the ground, that's where it was," Yankees spokeswoman Alice McGillion told the newspaper.
Initially the Yankees denied the jersey was ever buried in the footings of the new stadium. But clearly the Yankees brass is happier now with the possibility of a curse gone.
"I hope his co-workers kick the [expletive] out of him," Yankees co-chairperson Hal Steinbrenner said.
The newspaper said the jersey felt like a filthy rag, but the word "Red" was clearly visible.
The Yankees plan to donate the jersey to charity, and may pursue a lawsuit against the construction worker.

The Yankees officially reversed the jersey curse yesterday - extracting from the new stadium's concrete a David Ortiz shirt planted by a Red Sox-obsessed hardhat hoping to hex his team's arch rivals. Then they warned the traitorous construction worker, Gino Castignoli, to watch his back, saying criminal and civil charges could be on deck. Yankee President Randy Levine yesterday proudly held up the tattered shirt, which he said would be donated to Boston's Jimmy Fund for auction to raise money for cancer treatment and research.

Jeter ready to go; Moeller to catch for Yankees

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter was in the posted lineup for Monday night's game against Tampa Bay.

Jeter hasn't played since leaving a game on April 7 due to a strained left quadriceps muscle.

Chad Moeller, whose contract was purchased Monday from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, was listed as the starting catcher. Regular catcher Jorge Posada has been slowed by a right shoulder injury.

Backup catcher Jose Molina was out of the lineup. He left Sunday's game against Boston with a hamstring injury.

Posada seen likely to return to action this season

Jorge Posada's shoulder injury does not appear to be season-threatening. That's the early word on the New York Yankees catcher following an exam by Dr. James Andrews on Monday.

Posada was placed on the 15-day disabled list for the first time in his career on Monday, ending a remarkable run of durability at baseball's most physically demanding position.

The 36-year-old, who has caught at least 120 games in each of the past eight seasons, finally succumbed to pain in his right shoulder that he had been feeling for most of the season's first month.

While the early indications point to a return this season for Posada, a complete diagnosis won't be known for a few more days.

Yanks send struggling Kennedy to minors, recall Rasner

NEW YORK -- Struggling pitcher Ian Kennedy was sent to the minor leagues Sunday by the New York Yankees, who purchased Darrell Rasner's contract from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The Yankees promised patience with their young pitchers this season, but Kennedy was optioned to Triple-A after going 0-2 with an 8.37 ERA in six games, including five starts.

"I was kind of surprised," Kennedy said. "But it's bound to happen if you don't win, especially here."

Rasner pitched well yesterday... Also some of Kennedy's quotes make you scratch your head. He said something to the effect of "I'm looking forward to pitching where every pitch isn't life or death, and you aren't scrutinized as much".

ummmmmmm kid, you pitch in NY, and in the major leagues. What do you think it's gonna be like?
