Yankees cut their luxury tax bill again

The New York Yankees did accomplish something this year: They lowered their luxury tax for the second straight season.

The Yankees were hit with a tax bill of $23.88 million by Major League Baseball in a notice sent to teams late Friday, pushing them over the $100 million mark since the penalty for profligate spending was introduced in 2003.
The only other club that must pay the competitive-balance tax, as it is formally known, is the World Series champion Boston Red Sox, who owe $6.06 million.

For the second time this offseason, the Yankees have pulled their Phil Hughes-centered trade offer for Johan Santana off the table.
The Yankees, then, will not restart trade talks with the Twins unless Hank Steinbrenner has another change of heart, a baseball official with knowledge of the talks told 1050 ESPN Radio's Andrew Marchand.
The Yankees' desire Monday to turn their attention away from the two-time Cy Young winner leaves Boston and the New York Mets as Minnesota's trade partners, the official told Marchand.

Billy Crystal will get to "look mahvelous" in pinstripes. The actor will sign a one-day, minor league contract with the New York Yankees and play in Thursday's exhibition game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Crystal, an avid Yankees fan, will work out with the team on Wednesday and will wear uniform No. 60 for the game ? to be played one day before his 60th birthday. The Yankees said Monday they have the approval of baseball commissioner Bud Selig.

Paranoid that a wily Red Sox fan had managed to curse his team, New York Yankees? owner Hank Steinbrenner paid constructions workers to unearth a surreptitiously buried Red Sox T-shirt from beneath the visitors? dugout at the new Yankee Stadium and had it replaced with the body of Yankee reliever Kyle Farnsworth, who?s been dead to Yankee fans for several years.
