If the New York Yankees plan to keep calling on Mariano Rivera in the ninth inning, they might want to think carefully about who would be handing him the ball.
Rivera isn't happy that Joe Torre could be out as manager in New York and said the team's decision will be factored into whether he returns.
"I don't feel good about it," Rivera said yesterday, two days after the Yankees' third straight exit in the first round of the playoffs. "I don't see why they're even thinking (about letting Torre go). I wish he's back, definitely. If you ask me what I would want, I want him back."

Clemens leaves door open to pitch again
HOUSTON -- Roger Clemens isn't ready to say whether he's done pitching, but he knows who he'd like to see back as manager of the New York Yankees next year.
The seven-time Cy Young winner discussed his future and that of Joe Torre on Thursday while Clemens and Johnny Bench were holding a golf tournament as part of the Administaff Small Business Classic that begins Friday in Spring.
Asked whether he'd be back for his 25th season, Clemens said, "You know I haven't been very good at this, I thought last year was good. I thought three or four years ago was good."

NEW YORK -- Don Mattingly has been making managerial moves with the New York Yankees for several seasons -- in his head.
"I've heard that experience thing come up a lot," he said, "but in my own mind I've been managing for the last four years, and to be honest with you, as a player you're playing along the whole time."

Source: Girardi expected to accept Yankees' offer
The Yankees officially offered their managerial job to Joe Girardi Monday morning and he is expected to accept it, a source has told 1050 ESPN New York's Andrew Marchand. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told Don Mattingly and Tony Pena that they will not be getting the job.
Girardi was in the Denver for the World Series. A source said he is expected to fly to New York for the announcement, which is likely to come Tuesday. Girardi's contract is expect to be in the three-year, $6 million range.
Mattingly will not accept a position on the Yankees coaching staff, Marchand and ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney are reporting.

The Yankees have agreed to a contract with Joe Girardi to become the team's next manager and an official announcement could come as soon as Tuesday, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.
Girardi will sign a three-year contract worth approximately $7.5 million.
According to Olney, one person Girardi would want on his staff would be former Cubs pitcher Mike Harkey, perhaps as pitching coach.

Yankees offer closer Rivera $45M, 3-year deal

NEW YORK -- Mariano Rivera was offered a $45 million, three-year contract to stay with the New York Yankees. Now, the team is waiting to hear back from its star closer.

"He'd be by $4 million a year the highest-paid relief pitcher," Yankees senior vice president Hank Steinbrenner said Tuesday. "To say that's a strong offer would be an understatement."
On Monday, the Yankees retained catcher Jorge Posada when they upped their offer to $52.4 million for four years. Posada is due to take a physical Wednesday, another step toward finalizing that agreement.

Yankees ready to make offer that includes Hughes
A pivotal sticking point in the Yankees' trade talks with Minnesota about Johan Santana is the question of whether New York will include talented right-hander Phil Hughes in their offer.
And, within the internal discussions in New York's front office, the Yankees appeared on the verge Friday night of making an offer to the Twins that included Hughes.
"If they put Hughes in the deal," said one person familiar with the talks, "that could get it done for Minnesota."

NEW YORK (AP) -- The final regular-season game at Yankee Stadium will be Sept. 21 against Baltimore, and New York is raising prices for its best box seats by $100 to $250. The Yankees released their 2008 schedule and ticket prices on Monday for the last season in The House That Ruth Built, which opened in 1923. The team plans to move in 2009 into a new ballpark being built across the street in the Bronx.
