Being consistently good year in, year out is not an easy task in any sport, much less in college basketball. In fact, The Ohio State University Buckeyes are one of only two schools in the country to make an NCAA tournament appearance every decade since the 1930s. Their successful history includes a National Championship (1960), 10 Final Fours ( '39, '44, '45, '46,' 60, '61, '62, '68,' 07, '12) and 20 Big Ten Championships.
While the school's rich history of basketball success includes dozens of accolades to pull inspiration from, Nike focused on two in particular — the 1960 Championship season and the 1992 jersey — to design the Hyper Elite Dominance uniform that OSU will wear against rival Michigan on Feb. 11. The 1992 Ohio State Men's basketball team had a great season that included a Big Ten title and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. And while they unfortunately did not bring back a championship to Columbus, their all-gray uniform and shoe look helped shape the style of college basketball for years to come.
The Nike Hyper Elite Dominance Ohio State jersey features a rounded neckline with bonded taping inspired by the 1960 jersey, while the 1992 look lends red graphics and gray background. The shorts feature the current Ohio State logo with taping reminiscent of the 1992 short.
Nike
created the uniforms with performance and innovation at the forefront. The jersey has a lightweight sphere fabrication, with flocking at the interior of the neck for sweat management. The jersey features a unique articulated armhole system to maximize range of motion for the player.
The short has been re-engineered to flex with the player as he makes roughly 1,000 cuts or directional changes during the course of his game. Laser-perforated design elements and a lightweight ventilated waist help maximize cooling for the player. The Nike Hyper Elite basketball shorts are made of 100 percent recycled polyester and the jerseys are made of at least 96 percent recycled polyester, saving an average of 22 recycled plastic bottles per uniform.
Coached by Hall of Famer Fred Taylor and led by Lucas and Havlicek, the 1960 Ohio State Buckeyes defeated California 75-55 in the National Championship.
