The Dunk Abides
  • I didn't see any threads about a new mattress, so I thought I would start a new one. The soon-to-be-wify and I are looking into getting a king size mattress as an upgrade. Any input about sleep number, tempurpedic, or just solid beds would be insightful. I know it all depends on how the two of us actually feel after we have laid down on the bed. But any suggestions or feedback on previous experiences would be appreciated.

Me and the lady are also in the market for a new bed and mattress. We're here in NEOhio just east of Cleveland. Any suggestions for places to buy quality beds/mattresses for a decent price? I find everything at VCF cheaply made and Levin overpriced. I was curious about the actual quality of IKEA products, I know they look nice and have lots of options but quality?

I'm a huge fan of Original Mattress Factory.

Excellent quality, outstanding customer service & pricing that is understandable.

Yep. Just getting ready to replace the queen size set I bought there 14 years ago. Great produc, and pricing, if you have one near by. Closest one to me is a 3 hour drive one way.

I will probably end up buying from here:

One of their stores is literally 2 mins from the house, and as you can see they don't drop a lot of cash on advertising  so they undercut everyone in pricing.

My parents got their's from there and it is a good bed. My wife and I got a pillow top Seely from Levin and have been very happy. I think it's the best bed I've ever slept in. My mom spent a weekend watching my daughter and said our 10 year old Seely is better than her plush top TOMF mattress.

Don't get the stupid sleep number ones. I've been in a few hotels with those and hate them.

A good mattress should last 10-20 years so don't cheep out on it.

We bought our king size sealy posturepedic bed and frame for $400 at Mack Mattress Outlet. They get factory seconds and ones with cosmetic scuffs that can't be put on the display floor. They are perfectly fine, just not perfect aesthetically. You never see it with the sheets.

Bed markups are among the highest of any resold product.

Also, wherever you buy it, find the bed firmness you like and skip the pillow top. Add on egg crates, memory foam or whatever topper you want. Don't buy a pillow top mattress and have the cushion wear out after 5 years and force you to replace a mattress that has another 10-15 good years in it.

This is also an easy way to split up comfort / cushion levels for each bed mate.

Similar to the same route I went. I'll also add that it's worth the money buying a nice bed. That is of course if it fits your needs. Everyone is different and built differently. When I was younger a bed was a bed and I didn't give a shit to sleep on the floor.

Fast forward a bit and i'm 31 years old and have been powerlifting consistently for 16 years. I never realized the significance of a comfortable bed. I've had a shitload of back problems/chest/shoulders/legs after all these years and I have zero regrets of buying a higher end bed. Even the pillows can make a huge difference. Personally,i'd still rather sleep on the floor then in most beds. You just need to be able to test out the mattress firmness and make sure it's right for you. I am a stingy guy,but good sleep and less body aches isn't something to skimp on imo.

Which is why I opted for a $1k+ king bed instead of a "cheap" queen given our newlywed budget, just with a slight scuff on a six inch section at the bottom dropping it to $350.

I will say that macys has some remarkably poor beds priced at 2-3k. I found no difference between most of those and the $850 low end queen beds at other chain stores.

I agree a great bed is a crucial investment, I just can't stand the markup.

Can't really help. The wife and I decided on a twin size mattress in South Africa. It was lumpy but we learned to live with it.

The wife and I bought our mattress from MattressFirm. I'm sure some people will scoff at their prices/selection/service or something, but we had a good experience with them. They had the one we liked best and they worked with us on the payment and delivery so we had our new bed on the first night after closing on our new house. Couldn't have gone any smoother.
