I got my mattress when I moved to Florida last year from Sears. Since the bed frame I got could use a slatted bed base, I just got a mattress (no box spring) and scored a higher end Sealy for a little over $500 thanks to an inventory reduction sale and not needing a box spring.

Anyone have any experience with the Purple? I see so many ads for the Casper, and given our current mattress is 16 years old, I've been researching the bed-in-a-box and memory foam-type alternatives that are exploding in popularity today, and the Purple really has me interested ...

I haven't heard of them before - I'm in the same boat looking for a new mattress, based on price and reviews I'm leaning towards Brooklyn Bedding right now.

I can say this: my ex wanted some expensive mattress, which we got. I don't actually think that was expensive for a typical mattress, but it definitely seemed like it to me. Anyway, it was also a pillow top. That SUCKS. You can't flip it for rotation, so it develops grooves from consistent sleeping patterns and continuous rough sex in the same areas, and there is little you can do about it. Plus, I don't like the pillow top thing for comfort.

On a better note, for much cheaper my dad and his wife, who are picky on this stuff due to back pains, etc., bought a very frugal mattress from some online place. It is similar to a tempurpedic. (sp?) It comes in a manageable package, and when you unseal it in unvacuums into a bed, kinda cool. They love it so much they recommend it to everyone. I can get the name if you want to google it and read reviews.

Tuft & Needle was the place they purchased from.

Turned mine upside down anyways, got a mattress-topper from Bed, Bath, and Beyond and good as new.

How would you know? You weren't even there.

Wife and I recently replaced a Sleep Number bed we had for 10-years. Probably didn't _really_ need to replace it. I guess we could have had a new top ordered / custom made (yes, there are some aftermarket places that will do that and I wish I had known).

Anyhow, ended up spending an embarrassingly high amount. Got one that feet and head adjusts. We didn't get the split mattress... It has a topper (can be replaced) that is basically a memory foam on one side and pillow top on the other. Either side of the bed can flip the topper so if she doesn't like the memory foam she can go to pillow top pretty easily. It is blue tooth enabled and records sleep patterns, etc. Pretty cool technology.

Anyhow, not sure that it was worth what we paid... but I will say that it's the best sleep I've ever had. So... maybe it's worth it...

Mattress Mart on Sawmill Rd does the trick for me. They have factory seconds that can't sit out on the sales floor. You get the whole thing (frame and mattress) for like $300-450.

Casper comes like that. We got one and are very happy with it. There are now several similar online companies.
