Negative Recruiting/PSU chatter (LJ Sr. Thread split)

All of the above...quite likely the best recruiter of the east coast region in the last 10-20 years. I put my feelings in the other thread but any objection to his hiring does not come from his track record of recruiting and coaching players.

I've at this point been ignoring the meaningless objections. Hes our coach, people need to deal with it whether they like it or not, its not a popularity contest. And if he has those regions then that's awesome for . BeBecause osu is trying to get a foothold in those regions. Especially Virginia and the Maryland/dc area

Our campus isn't located in the middle of bumfuck nowhere like Penn State's, so I'd guess it's not necessary here.

No one other than Deety or BN27 know that better than I do.

However, I think acting like the slate is clean given what we've known about LJSr for a while now just because he became a current coach on the staff is slightly disturbing. I won't bash him, I hope he's able to maintain or improve what the DL was doing under Vrabel, but history just doesn't get erased.

For the record, I'd feel the same if Tress came back at this point.

Have you even read the objections? Hard to say that an objection to multiple racist remarks about our program over years span qualifies as "meaningless." Meaningless implies baseless, which is not the case here. It's not as if people dislike him for personal reasons...they are professional reasons and I would hesitate to say that concerns based on integrity are invalid.

You know I'm an avid follower of recruiting and want to gain every advantage in the book, but I have limits on what I think is a permissible way to do that.

I'm willing to wait to hear him address those things when he's interviewed here; I guarantee it comes up.

I do prefer he doesn't go into anything like that though while working here. Just do what he does best and let Ohio State be Ohio State. Take care of the little things and the big things take care of themselves.

Willing to reserve judgement on his legacy. Not sure I like all of what's been alleged in his past as a recruiter for Penn St, but also not sure I should believe second and third-hand accounts citing 16 and 17 year old kids. Larry Johnson seems to be very well respected by his peers, obviously Urban Meyer, and most importantly the kids that have played for him. Also appears to be fiercely loyal. Good enough for me.

Yes I've read the objections. He said racist claims about Osu. And no meaningless, means that it doesn't matter, and it doesn't. He's our coach now, what he said before obviously didn't matter enough to urban or he wouldn't have hired him. The concerns being valid to fas means little to people who matter and make decisions. Like I've stated before, we win big, and none of those objections will be remembered because everyone will have forgiven those statements.
His actions were wrong but, that's in the past. it doesn't take away the fact that he's OUR coach now.

And yes muck, va and md are quite important to recruiting. Thanks for stating such...

Agree.

Oh no, he talked bad about Ohio State in the past. Who gives a shit? He's not the only one and certainly won't be the last. He obviously doesn't hate the university or football program considering he agreed to join the staff. Time to move on people & accept the fact that he's now a Buckeye.

I don't know about you, but I don't post on message boards hoping that those who make the decisions will contact me for advice.

It was just the nature of what he said, not that it was negative. "So and so coach is leaving that is recruiting you", "The academics at X school are terrible" or "That school won't use you properly" or other negative remarks about a program is one thing. It happens. Accusing an entire academic institution and football program of being racists is a little different.

I'm not going to bring this up anymore down the road and I hope he is successful here. But I'm not going to pretend I like the hire either.

Sure doesn't sound like it...
You've already stated that you're disappointed by the hire because of what he said. Cool opinion. What matters most is can he develop our players and recruit like a madmen. He can do both. Awesome hire. Go coach Johnson. Like I've stated none of the negative comments said will matter when we win games. Winning an NC and/or a big 10 title and none of black player comments matter only those trophies.

Maybe there was an occurrence that led him to believe that.....I don't know.....nor do I really care that he said it. How many recruits did it cost Ohio State? It's apparent he no longer believes that or he wouldn't be at Ohio State. If the administration & head coach see him as a good fit to represent not only the football program, but one of the most prestigious universities in the country, then who am I to question it?
