This probably isn't terribly appropriate here but I have to try something.

I need work. I have been unable to find a job since May now. I had a decent job and a house and was going to Ohio State until in April the army called me back and said I was going to Iraq for a year. So I cancelled my lease, left school, quit my job and moved my wife in with my family. Well I went to South Carolina to do my reprocessing with the army and after two weeks they said they didn't need me after all. Since then I have been living at my family's house and can't find a job. I have looked in every job site and newspaper under the sun and get very few responses and I have no idea what else to do. My cell phone has been shut off because I am out of money, I can't pay my car insurance, my dad is paying my car payment for me, I live in an unfinished room with no insulation electricity or water that I have to climb a 12 foot ladder just to get into the room because its on the second floor and doesn't have a doorway in yet. I need help.

I am a hard worker with a strong army background, tons of laboratory experience both as a bench worker and as a supervisor and I was even accepted into Mensa. I have an associate's degree from George Washington University and until my call back was closing in on a Bachelor's degree in molecular genetics from OSU. I am more than willing to relocate to find a good job in the medical field or security or just about anything at this point. I am looking at moving towards the east coast possibly down to Georgia but that isn't set in stone.

If anyone knows anything that can help or is in the position to hire people for their company please keep me in mind, I am a fast learner and willing to try odd and even dangerous jobs I just need a job. I have a resume if anyone thinks they can help just let me know. Thank you and sorry if this was a board faux paux.

The medical field is a solid career opportunity with a lot of jobs go wanting.
Look into working in a med lab of some sort. Your experience should be a big help. You may have to move, again. Good luck!

The Naval Research Laboratory hires students - if you can get hired, they can offer tuition assistance as well.

NRL - Human Resources Office : Student Career Experience Program (SCEP)

Most of the science positions at the lab require a minimum of a Master's degree, however, it appears this student program can get you in the door while you obtain a Masters.

Also, check to see if you qualify for a National Defense Science and Engineering Fellowship:

NDSEG - National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship

Also, have you searched the USA JOBS site? I clicked on "Biological Sciences" and about 18 pages of job listings showed up. Some will no doubt require advanced degrees, but some will not.

USAJOBS - The Federal Government's Official Jobs Site

Hope this helps!
Go Bucks!

Have you looked into unemployment benefits? Your military service should make you eligible. One of my good friends has been receiving unemployment since he got back from Iraq in March. I know you'd rather be working, but it could at least help you get by until you find something in your field. I don't know how all that works, but I would think contacting the VA would be a good place to start. Wish I had more to offer. Keep your head up. Best wishes, Brother.

Thanks for all the responses and I will check those sites immediately, I currently live south of zanesville but am looking to move so that is a non-issue. Sorry to hear there are so many others having the same problems.

Happened to me too.. I had planned on taking a few trips this summer but had to cancel those because I had no money.. just settled for another part time retail job for barely any pay. And I was really excited about getting that. :(

Best of luck.

Another thought is to contact the local newspaper and TV and use those Mensa skills to get them to do a story on you. Your story is interesting and a-typical. People want to support the men that served our contry and hate to see one of our boys in trouble.

Worth a shot.

This is one thing that SUCKS about the current economy: it is not the "bottom" employees that have hard time finding work-- it is the best of us.

When I had this happen I temped. You'll always work and people will recognize you for your intelligence and hire you quickly. . . but it is corporate office drone hell, which may not be your thing. If you land in NYC by some chance, however, I'll totally hook you up. In fact, I just housed someone for two months doing the same thing and now she landed a seriously awesome job. . .

Good luck man. You deserve it.

(edit: of course that "someone" had a nice plaid skirt. . . maybe wear a kilt and show off those legs? Interview with cougars.)
