Nebraska Cornhuskers (corn)

Wife beating, nepotism, drugs, drugs, drugs, con artists, guy hunting raccoons armed with a wrench and a tent revival - it's either the set for The Music Man or Lincoln is a happening place.

Damn, damn, damn.

Nebraska Head Coach Mike Riley announced Wednesday that sophomore wide receiver De’Mornay Pierson-El suffered a foot injury in Tuesday’s practice and will be sidelined for six to eight weeks.

Riley also confirmed that freshman receiver Lavan Alston will be out for the season after suffering a knee injury during Tuesday’s practice.

As a freshman, Pierson-El ranked second nationally in punt returns, averaging 17.5 yards per return to garner second-team All-America honors. He led the country with 596 return years and tied for the national lead with three punt returns for scores. He was a two-time Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week and won the Jet Award for the returner of the year. In the preseason College Football Top247, Pierson-El was ranked the No. 201 player in the nation.

In addition to his punt return exploits, Pierson-El caught 23 passes for 321 yards and four scores, culminating in an eight-catch, 102-yard performance in the Holiday Bowl against USC, setting a school bowl record for catches in a game. Pierson-El also threw a touchdown pass against Northwestern in 2014.

Pierson-El was expected to be a big part of Nebraska's offense and special teams this season, serving with the top wide receiver group in fall camp and working as a punt returner.

Alston, a true freshman, was a four-star recruit who was starting to show progress in Nebraska's offense before the injury.

Maybe a positive regarding Pierson-El's injury is that he will return for a tough stretch of Big Ten games. The 6-8 week stretch could have him back for Nebraska's Big Ten West showdown against Wisconsin on Oct. 10 -- a key matchup in the Big Ten West division race.

Nebraska opens with BYU and plays South Alabama, Miami (Fla.), Southern Miss and Illinois before taking on the Badgers.

‘Huskers lose De’Mornay Pierson-El for up to two months with foot injury

Less than two weeks before his Lincoln debut, Mike Riley has been forced to deal with a significant blow to his offense — and special teams as well.

Nebraska announced early Wednesday afternoon that De’Mornay Pierson-El will miss a period of 6-8 weeks because of a foot injury. Pierson-El sustained the injury, the exact nature of which wasn’t detailed, during Tuesday’s practice.

As previously noted, the wide receiver’s absence will impact two of the Cornhuskers’ three units.

As a true freshman last season, Pierson-El started six games, catching 23 passes for 321 yards and four touchdowns. His 17.9 yards per punt return was good for second nationally, while his three returns for touchdowns was tied for tops in the country.

He was a consensus Freshman All-American.

I don't want to make light of rape or sexual assault, clearly terrible things and I don't want to diminish what she went though...but does this seem a little odd to anyone else? It was 16 years ago, he wasn't the coach at the time, it was off campus, and the assailant wasn't a football player. Seems more like she should be suing the school and the counselor who talked her out of going to the police.

So why IS he named?

Agreed 100% This is not something to ignore, but 16 years ago, she kind of had her chance to do something about it. Statute of limitations in Oregon expired 10 years ago. I know a civil suit is different, but this just feels like a money grab or smear campaign. Mike Riley left after the 98 season and came back in 2002, makes it look like she doesn't have a clue and is just throwing things out there. And yes, Mike Riley is like the nicest guy in the world. Can't imagine he would ever try to sweep anything like that under the rug.

I'd guess some combination of:

- Grasping at straws to get any kind of justice because she didn't do anything after it happened and the statute of limitations has run out to charge the actual assailant.
- Mike Riley is a public figure with a fat new contract at a premier name in college football. He might be pressured to write a check to make it go away.
- Riding the tide of public angst about football players committing sexual assault and domestic violence to raise publicity and support for the case.
