Nebraska Cornhuskers (corn)

http://www.omaha.com/huskers/chatel...cle_ad6de678-8e4f-5039-8512-04610c392158.html

Bo Pelini’s team didn’t just lose the biggest game of the season by 35 points. It didn’t just lose any realistic shot at a Big Ten West title. It lost all credibility and dignity. Friday the Huskers were still considered a candidate for the college football playoff. Saturday they were a laughingstock.

How does an 8-1 football team jump out to a 17-3 lead, then get outscored 49-0 in the next 30 minutes? How does a team’s coaching staff demonstrate no ability to stop momentum? Have you ever seen a program more emotionally fragile?

Repeat: In the history of Nebraska football — almost 1,200 games — the only opponent that has rushed for more yards than the 2012 Badgers is the 2014 Badgers.

Not a single player on the 2014 defense had a tackle in the 2012 Big Ten championship game. Why is that noteworthy? Because it shows it’s not the players. It’s not the talent. It’s more systemic.

Best-case scenario, it’s a bad scheme that doesn’t work against good competition. Worst-case scenario, it’s Pelini and his staff.

This is not even close to being a Top-10 program. If NU had played in the Big 12 or SEC or Pac-12 the past three seasons, there’s no way its record would be 27-10. The Big Ten has hidden Husker weaknesses and watered down Husker standards.

Yeah. Steve Sipple has been one of Bo's biggest allies here in the media. When everybody turned against Bo, Sip had his back.

Until Saturday.

Mind you - this article I'm sharing was posted in the MADISON papers:

Steven M. Sipple: Bo Pelini's Nebraska program should be past such embarrassments

If you thought Nebraska had advanced beyond the level of ignominy it endured Saturday, you were sorely mistaken.

Anybody see this coming?

Wisconsin rolls 59-24. Really?

The Badgers score 56 unanswered points? Get out of here.

Melvin Gordon rushes for an FBS-record 408 yards and averages 16.3 per carry? You must be kidding!

Wisconsin outgains Nebraska 627-180.

Wait, what?

I surely didn't envision such a collapse.

I asked Bo Pelini, the seventh-year Nebraska football coach, if he thought the program was beyond a game unraveling to such an extent.

"You know what? I don't get into all these big-picture talks," he said. "That's one football game. This program has won a lot of football games."

As snow fell around dinner time, turning Camp Randall Stadium into a gorgeous snow globe, Nebraska fans had to be crestfallen, angry, confused, disillusioned.

Or maybe they're getting used to this stuff.

I hope that never becomes the case.

There's a cumulative effect of the body blows Nebraska has withstood dating to, really, a stunning 62-36 loss at Colorado in 2001. The repeated humiliations on national television sap the spirit. It's difficult to quantify the impact of the losses, but every time they occur, it diminishes the "N" brand.

A loss such as Saturday's gives you pause. I'm guessing it will give Nebraska athletic director Shawn Eichorst plenty to think about on the long ride home — none of it pleasant.

Nebraska, at 8-2 overall and 4-2 in the Big Ten, is now an extreme long shot to win even the West Division. Another year likely will pass without a conference crown.

The latest embarrassment is frankly inexplicable for a program with Nebraska's wide array of resources and energy poured into the program. The coaching staff is stabilized. There are no good excuses.

The 6-foot-1, 213-pound Gordon is a great running back, obviously. But Western Illinois held him to 38 yards on 17 carries.

Western Illinois!

"Melvin Gordon" chants echoed into early evening. The crowd of 80,539 exploded every time he took off on one of his long runs.

He peeled off a 42-yard run in the first quarter, a 62-yard touchdown run in the second, a 44-yard run in the second and a 43-yard run in the third.

His 189 rushing yards in the second quarter broke Ron Dayne's school record of 170 rushing yards in a quarter, set against San Jose State in 1997.

Gordon's 408 yards topped former TCU great LaDainian Tomlinson's previous FBS record of 406 against UTEP in 1999.

Western Illinois, San Jose State and UTEP, I get that.

But Nebraska?

Granted, Gordon was a sight to behold if you're a Badger fan, or a fan of college athletics.

He ran with the power of a thoroughbred.

His team fed off his energy.

And once the Badger train was rolling, 16th-ranked Nebraska had no answers — none.

"We didn't get off blocks and guys who were free didn't make tackles," Pelini said. "We didn't react to a couple things. We made a couple adjustments but we didn't follow through with it.

"Defensive football is pretty simple. You have to get off blocks and make plays."

Give Wisconsin credit. The Badgers weathered Nebraska's early push. The Huskers led 17-3 early in the second quarter, turning two takeaways (including Gordon's fumble) into 10 points.

Nebraska looked poised, confident. Yeah, that's no joke. Sounds weird to say now, but it's true. Gordon, though, seemed to turn his game up a notch in the second quarter. By the time Wisconsin tied the game 17-17 midway through the second quarter, it was clear the Huskers' confidence was waning.

It was as if Nebraska was playing the team it used to be in the glory days.

You could almost sense that the Huskers were about to have one of those games. You know the ones. No reason to rehash, except to say they're the games you thought NU had grown sturdy and talented and mature enough to avoid.

Thing is, Wisconsin is probably the third-best team in the Big Ten. Think about that. Nebraska was taken to the woodshed by the third-best team in the league, its defense ravaged by an outfit that managed only 14 points against Northwestern.

"We didn't play like a smart football team," Pelini said. "There was — how do I put it? — breakdown after breakdown."

No way anybody could've seen this coming. No way, no how.

Shortly after watching Wisconsin's Melvin Gordon run through his charges in record-setting fashion, Nebraska defensive coordinator John Papuchis issued the challenge for this week.

"A lot of who we are as a program, coaches and players, is going to be revealed when we play against Minnesota," Papuchis said in Madison, Wisconsin.

Yeah, I'll bet.

The vibe I'm getting is that most Nebraska fans want Beck run out of town. Very little noise about Papuchis. Just seems odd to me.

The reason why Papuchis isn't being asked to be run out of here is because we all realize that he's just a fall guy. We all know who really coaches the defense here.

We haven't had a good offensive coordinator here in a very, very long time. I personally don't see a problem with running a pro style offense.

A pro style offense gets recruits to play at a place. But Bo is so adamant on running the same style of offense you guys run. But then he acts like a complete ass on the sidelines. Would you want your son to come here to play for a guy like that?!? Hell no.

MPD was dispatched to the intersection of N. Broom St. & W. Gorham St., for a MV x Pedestrian accident.

On arrival officers learned that Consbruck, (who was visiting Madison from Nebraska for today's football game) intentionally ran into traffic in an attempt to jump over a moving Union Taxi cab. Mr. Consbruck failed in his attempt, sustaining facial injuries in the process. Officers found Consbruck to be intoxicated and he was conveyed to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries. After citing Consbruck for Sudden Pedestrian Movement, Consbruck gave the officers an expletive laden statement in which he hopes the "Huskers" defeat the Badgers and that he promises to "never try and jump over a moving car again".

What is it about Wisconsin that Nebraska just can't figure out? NU has played Wisconsin four times since joining the conference in 2011 and have gone 1-3 against them, giving up 48, 70, and 56 points in those losses (they gave up 27 in their win).

Nebraska fan hurt after hurdling Wisconsin taxi - Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: http://www.jsonline.com/news/nebras...ing-wisconsin-taxi-b99391810z1-282885191.html

Madison — A Nebraska football fan is nursing an injured face Sunday after he tried to hurdle a taxi in Madison.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports 22-year-old Bryce Consbruck of Nebraska was in town to watch the Cornhuskers take on Wisconsin at Camp Randall Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Police said Consbruck was in downtown Madison around 2 a.m. Saturday when he ran into traffic and tried to leap over the taxi. He missed and hurt his face.

In the BigXII, it was Texas. Second verse, same as the first - just switched dance partners.

I think that's where the confusion sets in here. Wisconsin is a good program, but they're no Texas. They're closer to KState or CU (pre-implosion.)
It takes real skill and effort to go to 3 straight Rose Bowls and draw a blank in the win column. Especially when one of those was a Mid Major at the time.
