Nebraska Cornhuskers (corn)

Bingo. This isn't 1984 anymore. Nebraska became an also-ran program a long time ago.

Def of also-ran - A Loser, one soon to be forgotten.

Nebraska is one of the all time top 5 winningest football programs of all times. Only slightly ahead of The Ohio State University.
The last time we went to a national championship game was 2001. You guys last played in one in 2006.

I'm not trying to compare Nebraska to Ohio State, or to Texas or USC. The fact that we're even talking about anything Nebraska shows that the school is far from being an 'also-ran'.

I don't understand what the big deal was. He said it took everything in his power NOT to say that to his students. And that was because they left the game. I feel the same way when people leave OSU games. I hate seeing people leave drastically early (incliment weather aside - and no cold isn't iclement weather) especially when students were only guaranteed one ticket a season, which I know is no longer the case, but that's the way it used to be

First, the fact that he said it at all is a big deal. He hasn't exactly had a love fest with the fans in this state.

Second, if Les Miles, Nick Saban or even Urban Meyer says this, it's not a big deal. Why? Cause he's winning games, and not losing them by two and three touchdowns.

Third, the reason why the players are not disciplined on the field is because their head coach lacks discipline as well. The team goes as the head coach goes.

Bo, Bo, Bo, Bo, Bo. Get your agent to look into where you can land next year. It's not what you said 2 years ago (after a win!!), it's the fact that you were behind closed doors surrounded by only program people - and someone was recording. That person - or the powers that the person was recording for - sat on the thing for 2 years, waiting to ambush you with it at the right moment. The long-knives are out from within your circle. Bo should practice saying, "Ettu Brute".

If they want him gone, the AD should just come out at the end of the year and fire him for the purpose of "going in another direction", and that should be that. Someone in the football or athletic department is wanting to push things along.

Yeah, Bo drops F bombs. It's done everywhere, but in Youngstown it is an art. The word is used as noun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, gerund, and all punctuation marks.

Trolling as usual I see....

Your program struck gold with Osborne and since then has been an afterthought. But don't mind me--you and your "school" can go back to more important things like losing its AAU accreditation, having its alums get into public pissing matches with its head coach, bringing to light 2-year old tirades now that the head coach is persona non grata due to the team getting its shirts handed to it by a middling UCLA team, and engaging in other clownish antics that must have the other Big Ten ADs regretting the day your "school" was allowed in. Keep on living in the past man, keep on.

As if they'd be in the running for the same guys as USC and Texas.

Well if you're talking about marquee names you're absolutely right.

If you suppose for a moment that any of those programs might want to do something smart and hire a slightly under-the-radar young up-and-comer (i.e. Tom Herman) I think Nebraska can still attract that type but they don't want to be competing with the likes of Texas or USC for somebody like that.

Definition of crybaby -- see the Nebraska fanbase. Your program struck gold with Osborne and since then has been an afterthought. I've been warned by the mods, so let me apologize first to buckeyesin07 for the name calling. Let me touch on a couple of points he threw out there to everybody:

First - AAU Accrediation. Lost in 2011 by two votes. Syracuse decided to go the way of the French and surrendered that same year. All this PRIOR to the expletive filled rant that we're discussing. But, I digress...

What does ANY of that have to do with what happened on the football field last Saturday? Let me go this route - was it necessary that this recording be put out on Deadspin? No, although it gives us a look into the mind of a very undisiplined football coach who has fielded a very undisiplined team since he's been the head coach.

Was it necessary for Tommie Frazier to put what he put out on Twitter? No, but he's an alum. And he's got every right to do so, after winning two national championships for the school. I think guys who have put blood, sweat, and tears on the field have the right to make a comment if they wish to:

"I think if you're a true fan of Jim Tressel and a true fan of Ohio State, you understand that there has to be action taken against his mistakes that he's made. He's admitted he's made mistakes and I think ... the NCAA's going to come down hard. I don't think you can have a coach who knowingly put ineligible players on the field and you're not going to take those games from them last year."

Chris Spielman

Lastly - there's the 'bringing of light 2-year old tirades'. He's the head coach of a major university. Everything that he does from the time he took the job till now is under a microscope. Why? Irregardless of what many might think, the man is still a teacher of young men. Many won't get to even get on the field during a game, much less make it to the next level. All they will have at this point is their experiences they've learned at the feet of a man that shows questionable disipline. Yes, it's been two years, but has he truly changed? I think not.

In 2011 (some year), Coach Jim Tressel was suspended, then fired. People did more than look at his time at tOSU - they went all the way back to Youngstown State and looked at things he did there. Look at your current head coach. The media is practically saying that he bought the gun that Aaron Hernandez used in a murder. Is it fair? No, but it's part of the life you have to accept as a public figure, so he shouldn't have been surprised that this came out.

Success heals these wounds.

Here's the thing, it is a big deal, maybe not the recording per se, but the event in totality. If you go to a place like Nebraska, you want to be left alone to coach your way. The pressure is tremendous every year, and everyone, from fans to alumni to former players to radio people to the tow truck guy, think they know better than you what to do. That has to get annoying. But see, if you go to a place like an OSU or a Nebraska or a USC or a Texas and you follow legends and traditions in, that comes with the territory. You either embrace that or you stay coaching at places like Arizona State or Washington State or UTEP your whole career. It's why Cooper was never embraced here. It's why guys like Callahan and Lane Kiffin fail miserably. If you don't care what went on there before, best not to take the job, because everyone else does...and they will remind you of that every chance they get.

This.

And this:

What drives Bo Pelini’s temper is probably a combination of….
Just the way Bo Pelini is wired and was brought up
Bo Pelini does not feel appreciated for winning lots of games at Nebraska.
The Expectations for Nebraska Football

Let’s take the three things that drive Bo Pelini’s temper one at a time:
Bo Pelini is from a hotbed of football in Youngstown, Ohio where he grew up with the Stoops brothers, Bob, Mike and Mark, who are not exactly shrinking violets themselves and no doubt somewhere way back in Pelini’s life he either was given through DNA or acquired a “hothead” attitude which no doubt has been accelerated by coaching at a school like Nebraska that has fans that have some of the highest expectations in the country.
In six seasons at Nebraska Bo Pelini has put up records of…
Overall: 51 – 21
Big 12 and Big Ten: 29 – 11

…and he has taken the Cornhuskers to 3 Conference Championship Games in the Big 12 and Big Ten and at most schools in the America the above records would lead to statues of the head coach being built but at Nebraska Pelini’s record is actually……
Below Average
Let’s just see where Bo Pelini stacks up against the four previous Nebraska head coaches:
Bo Pelini: 51 – 21 (.708)
Bill Callahan: 27 – 22 (.551)
Frank Solich: 58 – 19 (.753)
Tom Osborne: 255 – 49 – 3 (.835)
Bob Devaney: 101 – 20 – 2 (.829)

Throwing out Bill Callahan’s tenure at Nebraska who should have NEVER been hired by any college to be their head coach especially the University of Nebraska Frank Solich, Tom Osborne and Bob Devaney set a standard of WINNING for Nebraska football that Bo Pelini and any future head coaches will have to both deal with and achieve or very simply….
They Will Be Fired
…and if Bo Pelini cannot handle that winning 50 games in five seasons at Nebraska is just not good enough for Huskers fans then he probably needs to be coaching at another school because that is very simply the…
FACTS OF LIFE at the University of Nebraska

If he just wanted to be 'left alone' to coach (which I think is the case with Bo, he's never embraced the media here), then that means he doesn't need to be a head coach.

Everything you're saying is correct. Two years after playing for the national title in 2001, you fired the coach who got you there, for only going 9-3. If I were a head coach, I wouldn't step into a position with such unrealistic expectations. Solich's replacement, Callahan turned NU into a barely .500 football program. Devaney, and Osborn, could recruit 5 star players from CA., FL., OH and TX., and that's what you guys need.

I can totally understand getting rid of him due to performance......but being pissed about how fans left way early (Remember Nebraska won) isn't a reason to fire him though. As I said, he didn't directly say Fuck you fans, he said he wanted to. In my IMO they are different.

Yeah - Freaking Steve PEEEEDERSON. He sabotaged the program for years by firing Solich.

But again, that's not what he said. He said that he wanted to say that to the fans. Instead, he said that to the fans behind closed doors to Greg Sharpe (who had to feel pretty awkward then, but think about the next show he has with Sharpe).

Then, he says it about Tom Shatel (who I'm not the biggest fan of), and the other reporter he was talking about (probably Dirk Chatleain).

Bo doesn't have enough capital invested with the fans to get away with that yet.

Love how ESPiN and all the other sports "reporters" make this an issue when we haven't even heard of the Alabama scandal once. Bo was on his way out in Neb anyway so whats the big deal. Sure the guy wins 9-10 games a season but loses every single big game he's been in. Hope Nebraska gets the coach they deserve as they need to be good the following years as their division will be the easiest and OSU needs a decent team to pound in the B1G champ game every year as douchebag Michigan won't make it. Hope this gets resolved soon. Also, Tuesday day drinking is underrated. Love having Tuesdays off and beating the crap out of my Michigan loving friend in NCAA 14 football. tOSU-5 Fuck Michigan-0
