To the Nebraska fans: How's things going in recruiting for you guys this year? Are you guys in on some big players here at the end of the season? How many scholarships do you have to give this year? How has moving to the Big Ten affected your recruiting positively/negatively?

We have a small number of scholarships this year, due to a small senior class. Only 15-16 scholarships available, so that will definitely limit how well our class grades out by Rivals/Scouts - we just won't be signing enough recruits to be in the top 20 (currently 37th on Rivals.)

Of that 15-16 we have 1 JC already signed, and 10 verbal commitments, leaving 4-5 more openings for further commitments. Given the low numbers, I think we're doing pretty well, and do have a couple "big ones" including at least 1 5-star who are possible to fill it out. Right now according to rivals, of the 11 I think its 6 4-star and 5 3-star, nothing below that.

How has the B1G affected things? Probably not all that much yet in either direction, I'd say. Bo, with his Ohio roots was already working at recruiting Ohio, things may have picked up slightly in other B1G states, but after only a few months membership, still too early to really tell. Fortunately, we still seem to be getting quite a bit out of Texas, hoping we can continue to do well in that fertile recruiting ground.

Just revised the numbers in my signature based on the completed 2011 season. Since Nebraska's 50 year average is currently dropping a year from our down period in the '60s each year, our 50 year percentage went from .785 to .790. tOSU dropped one thousandth, from .756 to .755, but we're still together firmly in control of the top 2 spots.

Probably the most surprising one was Alabama, who actually dropped one thousandth also, from .729 to .728. I didn't go back and look, but the year that dropped off the back for them must have been an undefeated season.

Update: We've gone from 11 to 13 commits - and gone from #38 to #34 in Rivals rankings. I expect us to end at 16, and if we get the 3 we'd like for the final commits, I think we have a reasonable shot of breaking into the top 25 with Rivals - not bad for as small a class as we're able to take this year.

I see that tOSU is #3 and Michigan is #5, but both already with 23 commits, far larger than our class can be this year. Great recruiting classes for both you tOSU and TSUN, it would appear.

I think it is awesome that you refer to them as TSUN. Eventually you will have all of your Husker friends doing it too!
:highfive:

It helps immensely to have a Buckeye (cheerleader back when Woody was coach) wife helping me to "understand." I'll definitely work on the rest of my Husker friends!

Nebraska has a QB commit who I'm really high on, Tommy Armstrong from the San Antonio, Texas area. Dual-Threat with a cannon. Reminds me of Troy Smith, actually.

We're pretty geeked about Tommy. He's not redshirting, which does not bode well for our current #2 Brion Carnes. Carnes, while an excellent guy, is toothpick-thin. I don't see him cracking the top of the depth charts without some serious body mass increases, and/or a ridiculous Spring/Summer.

Taylor Martinez, ugly throwing motion and all, is our starter for the next two years. I'm personally OK with that, having grown up in the era of run-first QBs at Nebraska, but many of our younger fans really, really don't like him. Whatever - Martinez isn't the reason we lost four games this year. Our porous defense had far more to do with that than Martinez.

I'm also not that worried about our recruiting class. We have at least one five-star guy ready to commit, and another highly-rated four star (or two?) in the mix, but recruiting to me is such a crapshoot that I can't get myself to care too much about it. I've seen too many busts in my time to invest too heavily in a High School kid and his ability to translate to the next level.

Looks like he would fit into their offense well..

Yes, I think its fair to say that everyone is VERY excited about Armstrong. A lot of talk that he's probably easily the top QB we've gotten in a decade or so. Looking forward to see him develop, there's a lot of talk that he's our future!

Well, my prediction was pretty darn close, if I say so myself! :) We ended up with a class of 17 recruits, and a team ranking of #24 at Rivals, putting us third in the conference, behind only tOSU and TSUN, both of whom of course had classes half again larger than ours at 25. For our small class size, I'm very happy with the end result. We only lost out today on one top recruit, and lost him to Stanford, which I understand.

Congrats to tOSU on a great class.
