Nebraska Cornhuskers (corn)

If they “Mason’d themselves” then it was when they fired Tom Osborne, not when they fired Bo. They had to fire Bo. He came within an inch of striking an official during a sideline tantrum. (Maybe during a home game against Iowa? I can’t recall.) There’s no earthly reason to think Bo Pellini is your ceiling. And there’s no reason it should be harder to recruit players to Nebraska than it is to recruit them to Wisconsin or Iowa. The right coach should be able to make the Huskers better than the Badgers or the Hawkeyes.

I’m surprised Scott Frost hasn’t been successful because, when he was introduced as their head coach, I thought I could see why his players would run through a wall for him. If anyone could sell the program to recruits, you’d figure he’d be the guy. But I figured the same thing about Harbaugh at Michigan and that didn’t work out either. But at least Frost recruited a highly rated QB out of California in Adrian Martinez, something Harbaugh never did. Maybe Martinez shows his maturity this year and the years developing him finally pay off. Or maybe he turns out to be a bust. We’ll just have to wait and see. It would be nice if they started carrying their weight in the conference, though. If Frost can’t hack it then fire his ass. There has to be at least a hundred coaches out there who can coach at least as well as Pellini without being total assholes.
Doc Tom retired, he didn't get fired. I say "Mason'd" in the sense that they fired a coach who had them operating pretty much at their ceiling. There is reason to think that was their ceiling because he was, by far, their best coach (on the field results) since Solich, who was declining on the field. It might be more accurate to scratch "Mason'd" from the lexicon and just say they "Solich'd" themselves.

Harder to recruit to than Wisconsin? I'd say yes. One, because Madison is a nicer town than Lincoln (not that Lincoln is awful, its a nice university town and I love Omaha); two, because Cheese has been a very successful program for most of the last 25 years. They have a proven system and regularly put kids in the NFL. Since 2000, they've had 15 NFL 1st Round picks to Corn's 4 and Corn's last 1st round pick was Prince Amukamara, a decade ago while Wiscy is pretty regularly having kids drafted in the 1st round.

Iowa is a good comparison. Typically an 8-5(ish) team that once every few years will put enough together for 10 wins and a run at a division title. They should and do typically recruit as well as Iowa.

I really thought Frost would turn them around to a point where they could rival Wiscy and win 9-10 games most years. The excitement around here when he was hired was intense. He seemed to be one of the best young coaches in the game and it seemed like the perfect marriage. But, yeah, it isn't working out and I don't see how it does. Most of the fanbase has turned on him. He isn't recruiting all that well and seems to suffer an abnormal amount of attrition each spring/summer...like Simple Jim up at tsun. Bo was a good performer in Lincoln. His teams won 9 games each of the 7 seasons he was there, including three 10 win seasons. His personality absolutely expedited his departure, but if he was winning just a bit more, I guarantee his attitude would be tolerated.

That's a lot of words to say if they think they can do better on the field that they did with Bo, I think they're sadly mistaken.

Osborne was fired? He literally was in the middle of a string of national championships. I seem to remember a well timed retirement to coax the coaches to vote him one last one, which is what they did.

Were there pictures of him in bed with a dead girl or a live boy that we never heard about?

Osborne retired late in their 1997 National Championship (suck it, scUM) season and hand picked his boy, Frank Solich to succeed him.

Osborne retired after the 1997 season. He could have coached there as long as he wanted to.

They fired Frank Solich after he went 7-7 in 2002 (ending streaks of winning seasons and being ranked), and 9-3 in 2003, dropping his overall record to 58-19 (.753). That could have been when they overestimated the status of their program, but it was only a few years after 3 MNCs in the 1990s.

Solich actually lasted one more season being fired after going 9-3 before their Bowl Game in 2003. Their interim coach for that bowl game? Defensive Coordinator Bo Pelini, who led them to a 17-3 win over Sparty in the Alamo Bowl.
