Nebraska Cornhuskers (corn)

OUCH!

...

So where is the toughness?

Big Ten Network analysts asked that at a recent Husker practice, calling the workout “Pac-12 style.” That’s Riley’s old league, known far more for finesse than power. The Big Ten is sausage-ball, made at the line of scrimmage.

Toughness isn’t an issue at Michigan. Ask tight end Jake Butt about playing for coach Jim Harbaugh.

“He forces us to be tough,” the senior All-America candidate said. “When you practice for four hours and you’re smashing into each other, you don’t have any choice but to be tough.”

And how does Michigan A.D. Warde Manuel support Harbaugh’s methods and madness?

“He has free rein,” Manuel said. “I want Jim Harbaugh to be Jim Harbaugh.”

Toughness isn’t an issue at Ohio State. All-America middle linebacker Raekwon McMillan said the Buckeyes’ fall camp is no place for the weak or timid. All involved are utterly accountable to coach Urban Meyer — every play, every day.

“The sense of urgency we have comes from the tradition we have at Ohio State,” McMillan said. “Failure isn’t an option. They put us through the ringer.”

Toughness isn’t an issue at Michigan State or Wisconsin, either. Those schools have taken the former Nebraska way of doing things and successfully made it their own.

Where does all this leave Nebraska?

Nebraska Announces Home and Home Series With Youngstown State

The Huskers will host the Penguins in 2017 before playing at Youngstown State in 2020.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers announced today that they have come to an agreement with Youngstown State for a home-and-home series that will begin in 2017. The Huskers will host the Penguins in 2017 before playing at Youngstown State in 2020. The 2017 meeting will mark the first match-up between the two schools. The 2020 meeting will be the first time Nebraska has played a road game against an FCS school.

"We had an immediate opening that needed filled in 2017, and this achieves that for us," Nebraska head coach Mike Riley said. "We'll go anywhere and play anyone. Youngstown State is one of the premiere FCS teams in the country, and as McNeese State proved last year, there are no guarantees once you get two teams on the field. This will be a competitive series, and that's what we want--to compete."

The 2017 game fills out Nebraska's non-conference schedule, which already includes Oregon and Northern Illinois.

Take this with a grain of salt when I say it....

Riley still has to grow on me as a football coach (x's and os), but he's growing on me as a guy who appreciates the diversity of his players.

As more criticism was focused on the three Husker players who chose to kneel during the national anthem, the university's president strongly defended their rights on Tuesday.

University of Nebraska President Hank Bounds said he "completely opposes" imposing any actions against the players or changing any policies that would restrict their ability to express themselves.

Earlier Tuesday, an NU regent said Huskers Michael Rose-Ivey, DaiShon Neal and Mohamed Barry, the three players who chose to kneel as the national anthem was performed Saturday at Northwestern, demonstrated “poor judgment” and offensive behavior.

Regent Hal Daub of Omaha, who served two years in Korea during the Vietnam War-era, and a former Omaha mayor, said that student-athletes at NU “are not supposed to do things that create disparagement or negative implications.”

Bluehairs around here done lost their ever loving mind over this. Let me say a couple of things:

First - you have to know that Hal Daub is regarded around the AA community in Omaha as one of the most racially divisive mayors in Omaha history.
Second - Gov. Pete Ricketts didn't want to meet with the president earlier this year when he was here - at first.
Next - Rose-Ivey and DaiShon Neal discussed it with the team PRIOR to doing it. Team signed off on it, including the coaches.
Lastly - how do you think some of "the most wonderful fans in College Football" have responded to this?

you're an ignorant agitator buddy. I'd shake the hand of any husker but yours.

All that these players are doing is dividing the country even further. Most fans just want to enjoy football. You're driving fans away from sports. That's all you're accomplishing. Well, that and dividing people that don't want to be divided. It's very saddening to see this going on when most of us out here just want to get along, be friends and treat each other equally.

Unreal - I thought Mike Riley was more mature than this

Look at all these posers coming forward after Kaepernick takes a knee. Get out of here... Yeah look at the hardships you've received. You play a sport at a college you couldn't get in with your academics. Let's all jump on the white guilt train!

There is a right and a wrong platform for bringing attention to an issue. Looting and burning store fronts is just as effective of a protest as kneeling for the national anthem. You get just as much sympathy to your cause.

Sounds like Michael's really worked up about the time he got kicked out of a frat party. I didn't seem to hear about any Lincoln police brutality when they investigated rape allegations last year with one of his teammates. In fact it doesn't appear that Lincoln police has had any issues with minority members of the football team or any college student.

Disrespect to the flag and anthem is not a way to bring respect to the issue.

I mean, really, a white guy was bulleted by deputies here in town, and no one batted an eye...

Here's Rose-Ivey's statement to the media:
