Game Thread Nebraska at tOSU, Sat. Oct. 26, 12pm ET, FOX

The overarching goal of this season is to beat *ichigan.

Yeah, I know, "loaded" roaster, Natty run, etc etc.

No... Beat those fucks up North, get the world back on its correct axis and let's go from there.

That said, I'm starting to have both a vision and a concern. The concern is that Ryan Day isn't the head coach we need. The vision, I suppose similar to Cooper, is that a win over scUM saves his job as we continue to limp forward.

Aside, well played by Nebraska. Matt Rule is a good coach, who got a raw deal in Carolina. They're a program back on the rise.
Agreed. I never buy in to the "Natty or Bust" hype. Look at the last 3 Nattys the team has won.....1968 2002 and 2014. None of those teams was really projected as a "contender". ( Maybe 2014 before we lost Braxton 10 days before the 1st game.) Other years when they WERE hyped, they fell flat. Remember how the Bucks were anointed the favorites to win it all in 2015 before the lights were even turned off in Jerry World?
Too many things have to happen to win a Natty, many completely out of the team's control. Example...J.T. Barrett will always be one of my favorite Buckeyes of all time, but who thinks they win it all if he didn't go down and played the rest of the season? OSU made that 1st CFP because of the total evisceration of Wisconsin in the B1G Championship. They had to change up the whole offense because of Cardale playing. All three of those years were magical seasons where a lot of things fell the Bucks way.
My realistic expectation for the year is !. Beat TCUN. 2. Win the B1G. and 3...make a decent run in the CFP. That's a lot right there. Anything else is gravy.

If This Were a Movie: Buckeyes’ performance felt like a ‘Nightmare on Woody Hayes Drive’

One, Two, Dowdell’s coming for you. Three, four, better lock your door

how-to-watch-the-nightmare-on-elm-street-movies-in-chronolog_nsjk.jpg

When Ohio State took the field against Nebraska this weekend, the Buckeyes were returning home after a one-point road loss to the current No. 1 team in the country. Nebraska was hitting the road again after a disastrous performance in Bloomington, which led to Indiana’s 56-7 routing of the Huskers.

Maybe the Huskers just felt like getting in the Halloween spirit, or maybe the cracks in the Buckeyes’ foundation are just becoming easier for opponents to exploit. Either way, in theory, this game should never have been close, and yet, Ohio State just could not shake the Huskers.

In fact, for the better part of the game, the Buckeyes seemed half asleep out there. And unfortunately for Ohio State, bedtime is when Freddy Krueger does his best (worst?) work.

In the 1984 Wes Craven horror classic “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” Krueger is the stuff of nightmares — literally. He targets a group of teenagers in their dreams, except that when Krueger kills you in dreamland, your death translates to reality too. We learn the rules of Krueger’s game early, when Tina Gray is chased by him in her nightmares only to realize upon waking up that her nightgown has been slashed.

But Krueger isn’t just haunting Gray’s nightmares. He’s also wrecking the sleepy time of Tina’s best friend—our protagonist Nancy Thompson—and Nancy’s boyfriend Glen.

So how do you shake something that only comes to life when you’re sleeping? You stay awake.

It’s advice the Buckeyes would do well to heed moving forward, though they failed to do so this weekend against the Huskers. Nebraska stayed right on the Buckeyes’ tails the entire game, outpacing Ohio State in time of possession, first downs, third-down conversions (the Buckeyes converted a mere one out of 10 third-down opportunities), and total rushing yards.

The Buckeyes struggled to establish their run game, in large part due to offensive line struggles. With talent like Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson at running back, coupled with Chip Kelly’s offensive schemas, it’s hard to blame anything but the offensive line’s ability to create room (which is also a credit to the job Nebraska did defensively).

Over the course of four quarters, they punted five times and missed a field goal they should have made. They should count their lucky stars that the defense managed to stop the Huskers from scoring after Will Howard threw an interception that put the Huskers on the two-yard line.

If they made any progress, the Huskers had an answer. Those answers came in the form of three field goals (long and impressive ones, at that), a touchdown run from Dante Dowdell to give the Huskers a 17-14 lead in the fourth quarter, and a two-point conversion on that touchdown, all of which slashed the Buckeyes’ lead like Freddy Krueger chopping up humans in their sleep.

In fact, Krueger seems to stay on the heels of Nancy and her friends too. Any time they make headway on figuring out exactly what this freak’s deal is, they doze off and he’s back to swinging his little sword claws around.

“Seven, eight, gonna stay up late.

Nine, ten, never sleep again.”

.
.
.
continued

Just sayin': Sad but true. But can the Buckeyes "turn it around" against Penn State?

At least we didn't have to wait until November for bowl eligibility, though it was a lot closer than I wouldve believed two months ago

OK, what is the best thing about being 6-1?

Yeah, I pointed it out before the clock hit 0:00

Unless there is a much better solution to the LT problem than we have any right to expect, a bowl game might be the best this season has to offer

I was concerned VERY early in the game about Zen, I'm sure he's a good kid, and a solid program guy, but like my DC used to say, when you see a fish, you know a fish. Unfortunately he happens to play a position that isn't remotely easy to hide/scheme your way out of.
They didn’t hide or scheme that well to help him. Day basically said he hoped Zen would grow during the game. That’s fine but he never was considered a starter. There has to be an effort to help the LT ..sliding the line, extra tackle in the game, …,.

With around 24 hours to think about it...

Offensively - Zen had his shot, and I understand giving him his shot - good program kid, didn't transfer out, probably works his ass off in practice - but once it became obvious he didn't have the ability, adjustments should have been made then and there. Everyone has their ceiling. You just hope he's not significantly injured because no one wants to see a player get injured. Sadly, while it doesn't typically come down to just one kid, I think it caused the whole offense to stutter a bit and having superior talent won the day, ultimately.

Defensively - The defense needed a game like this - a game where they had to know they couldn't just rely on the offense to bail them out. It happened to work out in a game that never should have been remotely this close though. Still some things to clean up - Iggy being super handsy on coverage is baffling, he's not being taught that - and discipline in the pass rush are two that spring to mind.

Special Teams - they really need to find a kicker who can be consistent from 40+. The art of kicking has evolved to where 50+ is becoming more regular in the college game. Punting was better yesterday - statistically the best of the season so far - and being able to flip the field was very important. Returns were ok but nothing spectacular.

Coaching - This was the best they had after 2 weeks? Why was there no secondary planning for if Zen struggled? Why wasn't there a plan in place to give him support with an Hback or TE, at least every once in a while? And where the hell were the key screens?! Nebraska was looping its linebacker to the running back side (meaning if the back was to the right of Howard, Nebraska was having that LB loop to the defensive left side) to take the run option away from Howard, and this resulted in several 'gives' that weren't there....maybe it'll be obvious in the film study but something had to be open. I don't think they threw it more than twice. And if they are covering the key screen super tight, run a 'key and go' and let your superior receivers to up and get it. On defense there was some improvement but you also saw some of the same inconsistencies from front to back in the scheme so it's not totally fixed yet. Raiola's big run came out of the pass rush being undisciplined and going way too far up field and too compliant when being pushed a certain way. They DID seemingly fix that in the 2nd half though as there was some improvement.

All in all this was, at best, a D+ performance. They survived. On to the next one.

Michigan is not a good football team but unfortunately this team does a lot of things at times that play right into Michigans hands. That game is far from the gimmie some think it is.

The discouraging thing about Zen, is the staff thought he was best equipped to be the LT out of the other O line members on the team. What does that say about the players that he passed over?

It makes me wonder what happened to Montgomery for sure. IIRC he was always the first guy in last year and came in on jumbo packages.

It also makes me wonder about the amount of money this staff is making and how we yearly about this time find ourselves discussing the weak links and who needs replaced at the end of the season.
