Tough defense on both sides, although I expected MSU to have the passing game prepared better for this game. Irish did a pretty good job of stopping the running game last year, and I expected that they would stack the box again this year to slow down Bell. After seeing how Maxwell did against Boise this year, it's clear that you must force MSU to throw the ball to shut them down. I expect he'll gel with his wide receivers later in the year, but they're really breaking in that passing attack.

MSU showed a very talented front 7, although I would almost say Purdue's looked stronger. They definitely made it tough to run the ball until their defense was tired in the 4th quarter. Golson didn't have great numbers passing, but he didn't turn the ball over which was the #1 contributor to losses last season with Rees. Holding onto the ball seemed to be enough to eek out the win. I'll say that MSU did a heck of a job shutting down TE Eifert tonight, I don't think he had any catches, which is the first time in the last 22 games I believe, going back to Oct 2010.

Looking forward to Michigan next week. I expect it to be a close game, if any of the last 3 contests have shown anything. I'd like it if the game doesn't come down to the final seconds again, but it's becomming something of a certainty :roll2: Hoping we don't shit the bed and give up 4 scores in the 4th quarter this time at least.

I've said it before; the only thing that will win a lot of Ohio State fans over to the idea that conference strength matters is the day when we get left out of the dance because of the perceived weakness of the Big Ten.

Conference strength certainly matters, I'm just not sure how me being concerned about it will help. Obviously that's not what you're trying to imply, it's just frustrating to me because while I want OSU to play in a great conference which makes the team and coaches step it up a level, there's really nothing you can do about it right now. And besides, caring about OSU takes up most of my time anyway. I love college football because I get to root for OSU, and I'm starting to loose my passion for it because of the constant media attention towards conferences, and the emphasis now placed on making sure your conference is great and rooting for teams in your conference. I don't want to sit around and worry about the scores of the Wisconsin (fuck Bielema) and MSU games during the weekend. I never did that stuff until 07 and 08 when (for me) all the conference stuff seemed to become more evident.

I wish there was a good solution as well, but unfortunately I don't think the B10 is getting any better any time soon. PSU is a burning crater for the next 8-10 years, Nebraska just can't figure it out, and no other team has the tradition or the recruiting ability to become a consistent top 10 team. So unless the B10 can find a way to add another power team to their numbers, it's going to be the same story for the next decade.

Luckily the playoff means that there is a greater likelihood that OSU won't get left out. As long as OSU takes care of business, they should be able to be a top 4 team.

Personally, I have no idea why Sparty was built up to be the powerhouse of the B10. They rely on Bell, and once teams noticed that's what they rely on, it's easy to stop. This in no way makes ND a great team, at all. I think USC runs away with a victory against ND. The Bucks are clearly the class of the conference, bowl eligible or not.

I can see ND getting good pressure on Barkley which could make it close, but if given time he may throw for 400 yards against them. And I agree, ND isn't a great team, but they're always a great story cause either their fanbase will listen, or tons of other fans will complain and hate. They do have a very good defensive front though and Gohlson has a lot of potential.

The rankings said more about the Big 10 than about Sparty. You couldn't just ignore the whole Mid-west and Sparty had a proven defense, a great running back and were the runner-ups sooooo...

Conference is especially short on QBs - lost a great deal of talent last year with Cousins, Wilson and Stanzi. Shoe lice, Martinez and Miller are great athletes, but I wouldn't call any of them a great QB.

The conference hasn't had much in the way of QBs in many, many years.

Sparty was ranked where they were because they almost won the conference and took down the Bulldogs in their bowl game.

USC lucks out because they play ND at home and at the end of the season. If they can get their o-line healthy and work out the kinks they should be fine.
As far as the B1G goes it looks like the only team with a chance to win a bowl game won't be eligible to be in one. The rest of the conference has looked really bad. We'll see how UCLA ends up doing, they've looked like the real deal. That close game on the road might look pretty good on their resume come December. Whoever goes to the Rose Bowl this year from the B1G will likely be curbstomped.
