NCAA - slowly ruining football (rules changes - merged)

I think that they should at least consider tweaking the new rule to exclude the final 2 minutes of both half's. That way a team won't lose time before they even have a chance to snap the ball.

FWIW, this rule may actually really play into our hand next year as I envision the Buckeyes becoming much more of a 2002 style team (Strong D, Special teams, low mistake offense). Get ready for some tight games next season. :wink2:

Did anyone watch Wisconsin-Penn State this year? Bielema made a complete mockery of the rule. Wisconsin scored near the end of the first half, then ran the last 12-15 seconds off the clock by sending all their guys offside and kicking the ball over and over til the time was gone. I guarantee the NCAA rules guys will make some change to this rule, probably the one that's been mentioned where the rule won't apply during the last two minutes of a half.

Give Bielema credit it was smart coaching. He used the rule to his advantage.

True and I am glad he chose to use it in a game like that rather than use it a lot more in a game that truly mattered. It lets the NCAA know there's a problem with that rule and that it needs to be adjusted.

Oh, I do. Any time a coach comes up with ways to circumvent rules like that, I applaud it - not only do I think it's funny, there's no better way to point out flaws in the rulebook than by exploiting them during the actual games. I suppose when I said "made a mockery of the rule" it came off like I didn't approve of what he did, but actually I'm all for it.

NCAA looks to scrap new clock rules

Committee recommends kicking off from 30-yard line

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) -- An NCAA committee has proposed rolling back some football rules that were enacted last season to shorten games after coaches complained the changes were unfair.
The NCAA football rules committee, meeting Wednesday in Albuquerque, N.M., recommended going back to starting the clock on the snap after a change of possession instead of when the referee signals the ball ready for play.

I'd prefer to just have them cut commercials down during gametime and then do halftime like soccer -- 15-20 minutes of straight commercials.

Then if they do that, no body would watch the commercials and the ads wouldn't get any recognition because who wants to watch 15-20 minutes straight of commercials (not that this would happen but realistically if this were to happen)? I wouldn't, and i think people would just change the channel until the game comes back on.

As I noted, other sports venues (with much smaller fan bases) are done this way. It's not unheard of, and it's not like they'd have to completely stop commercials during the game either.
And BestBuck already pointed out that most of us channel surf, surf the internet (ie: commercial during PSU - tOSU right now), etc. during commercials anyway.
