NCAA - slowly ruining football (rules changes - merged)

You can't give part time refs the ability to eject players based on a real time judgement call and no replay.

You just can't do it.
Why not? Every ejection policy in every sport is a judgement call by the official. The only one (I can think of) where replay can determine an ejection is throwing a punch in basketball. Or, if you still believe that then you better take the ejection penalty out of every single NCAA sport... there are zero full-time officials at that level (though some can come close in basketball).

Note: The above does not mean I support the new rule, I just think the reason given above does not hold water.

That makes me a nervous with Shazier and Bryant trying to go for those big hits.

It's more than that. All it takes is a bad throw, or just a bad decision by an opposing QB near any of our guys and you might have one of those bang bang type plays that some over zealous ref throws a flag at.

I love how the NCAA has already gone overboard to pussify the sport by calling almost every big hit a 15 yarder. Now they go one step further to make this even more absurd. I really hope this is some fad that will die out with lots of fan backlash. I understand calling blatant helmet-to-helmet Taylor Mays blows for a personal foul and perhaps if there is such a pattern, a possible one game suspension. But calling it in a game without review is just ridiculous. I'd say 75-80% of the penalties called for this were absolute bullshit this year...usually it was a clean hit and the ref didn't see it right, or the defender aimed lower but the ball carrier lowered his head instinctually and it became a high hit. Not really much a defender can do anymore.

The biggest joke I saw last year was the Nebraska guy flagged for "hitting a defenseless player" when I blocked a Wiscy defender who was closing to make a tackle on a Nebraska returner...and it wasn't even above the shoulders (hit the dude square in the chest).

not NCAA, but my favorite in the NFL was when Pac Man Jones hit a Cowboys WR who CAUGHT the ball, hit him in the chest to jar the ball loose, called a defenseless hit

I remember that play - it was a great block by the Husker WR Kenny Bell.
