NCAA punishes USC - Reggie Bush, OJ Mayo, Dwayne Jarrett, Joe McKnight investigation

Look for this all to heat up magically just before the game with Ohio State. Look for us to get tarred with the same brush of "big time programs you love to hate who are probably dirty and disrespected your grandmother".

Honest question. Given the last two BCS outcomes, and the current negative Big-10 perception (for the puropose of my inquiry, it does not matter if the perception is valid or not, just that it is there), if you get clocked by USC, does Tress' reputation take a large hit nationally?

I mean, you have a team that is so loaded that you can't blame personnel if you lose. So the pundits will look at one of two things to explain high profile game consecutive defeat number three: 1) coaching, or 2) that the big 10 sucks (that about exhausts the critical analysis skills of most writers).

I think you beat USC this year, so its a moot point. But I think Tress will take a hit if you get thumped out west.

Re: The NCAA may be close to ruling that former USC running back Reggie Bush is retroactively ineligible, which could cause Bush to lose his 2005 Heisman Trophy and the Trojans to forfeit games in 2004 and 2005.

Re: More realistically: The NCAA forces USC to "vacate" any victories from the record books that it attained when Bush was ineligible. (And only then if it's found that the school had reason to be aware of Bush's arrangements.)

There's the loophole for USC to not forfeit any games. Call me a pessimist, but I really don't believe it (i.e. USC forfeits games) will ever happen.

Re: For one thing, the NCAA case is still a long ways from being resolved. We're still only in the investigation stage. It could be weeks or months after that deposition before the NCAA officially "concludes" its probe, at which point it must present its findings to the school in a "notice of allegations." The school then has a certain amount of time to respond, eventually there's a hearing, and, finally, the infractions committee announces any penalties. The whole thing could take a year or more.

The sad fact is that if the NCAA investigation is ever completed it will take at least another 3 or 4 years to actually be finalized. And by 2012 nobody will remember who did what and/or even "give a crap" about it any more. :(

I thought if the Heisman was revoked that would the Heisman committees doing and the NCAA has nothing to do with it?

From the official Heisman Trophy website:

The ballots state that "In order that there will be no misunderstanding regarding the eligibility of a candidate, the recipient of the award MUST be a bona fide student of an accredited college or university including the United States Academies. The recipients must be in compliance with the bylaws defining an NCAA student athlete."

I don't think any moreso than it has thus far. Look at Bobby Stoops, he has choked away four consecutive BCS bowls and is still looked at as a top coach. The USC game is viewed as a tough game, so I don't think a loss damages his rep. Keep dominating the Big-Ten and beating your rivals and you're doing your job...people see that.

I think the living arrangement started in early 2005, so I don't think this whole mess will result in USC forfeiting any games in their 2004 National Championship year. So I don't see Oklahoma (who got spanked in the Ornage Bowl by USC that year) or anybody else being able to back into any claim of a national title.

I think it's possible they forfeit some games and the Pac 10 title in 2005, if Bush is declared retroactively ineligible for 2005. If that happens, it will be interesting to see if the Heisman folks decide to yank the trophy (and subsequently if they then award it to runner-up Vince Young, who would at least be a very deserving winner for 2005).

I wondered about that too. If the Heisman voting was after the Rose Bowl Vince Young would have won it by a landslide.

I'm watching the Bengals/Lions preseason game, and they just showed a Dick's Sporting Goods commercial with Reggie Bush. He shows up unannounced at a HS football practice and starts handing out free Addidas shoes. I wonder if they'll have a follow up commercial where all the kids are informed that they lost their eligibility for amateur sports.

Not to worry, the kids will probably go to FSU or USC and would therefore, either fit right in with free shoes, or be out of eligiblity and well into their NFL careers before the free shoe scandal is investigated.
